Sacramento State University has been an education and training facility since 1952 for students preparing for careers in speech-language pathology and audiology. Through the campus-based Maryjane Rees Language, Speech and Hearing Center graduate students evaluate and treat speech and language problems under close supervision by faculty who are nationally certified and state-licensed speech-language pathologists or audiologists.

On October 11th, the CSHA Foundational First Team, a scholarship and graduate preparation program supporting underrepresented and first-generation students in communication sciences and disorders, partnered with Dr. McCollum to host a Student Research Symposium.

This virtual event celebrated the voices of students and professionals in speech-language pathology and audiology, highlighting their innovative research and contributions to the field.

Our outstanding CSAD student and member of the CSHA program, Jessica Selg, presented her research,β€œRBT vs. DSP: Evaluating the Adequacy of Training Methods and Confidence in Managing Escalated Behaviors”.

From Year 1, our students dive right into hands-on experience through the robust services offered in our on-campus clinic including but not limited to hearing aid fittings, cochlear implants, vestibular evaluations, auditory processing disorder, and tinnitus care.

By the second semester of Year 2, they begin one of five off-campus rotations in diverse clinical settings across Northern California β€” from schools and hospitals to ENT clinics and private practices.

πŸŽ“ Real-world training starts early here, preparing future audiologists to make a difference from day one.

πŸŽ“ Have questions about applying? We have the answers! πŸ’¬

FAQ #1: Who should I ask for a professional letter of recommendation? βœ‰οΈ

A: Most students ask the audiologists they completed their observation hours with to write this professional letter. πŸ‘©β€βš•οΈπŸ‘¨β€βš•οΈ

FAQ #2: Is the GRE required this year? 🧠
A: No, the GRE has been waived this cycle. πŸ™Œ

FAQ #3: How will my application be evaluated? πŸ“„
A: We use a holistic approach to reviewing applications. This means that we use your transcript grades (GPA), resume, essay, letters of recommendation, observation hours, and interview in our decisions.

✨ The holistic review combines your unique experiences with traditional academic measures, allowing the committee to consider several factors that contribute to your potential as an Au.D. student in our program and future audiologist. πŸ‘‚πŸŽ“

FAQ #4: Why are there two deadlines? ⏰
A: Our first deadline is the priority deadline, and the second deadline is the final deadline. We encourage applicants to submit their materials by January 5 (the priority deadline). πŸ“… These applicants will have their interviews scheduled and decisions earlier than the final deadline applicants. If you need more time, continue to work on your application and submit it by February 15. πŸ—“οΈ

FAQ #5: Can I meet someone from the program and see the clinic? πŸ‘‹πŸ₯

A: Yes! Contact Dr. Laura Gaeta, Au.D. Program Director, to schedule a prospective student tour and meeting (30 minutes). The time includes about 15 minutes for the tour of the clinic and 15 minutes for questions. πŸ’¬ To schedule office hours either virtually or in Folsom Hall (no tour):
