Shortly after birth, feeding challenges led to the discovery of Alberto’s complex congenital heart condition. ❤️

At Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento, a multidisciplinary congenital heart team supported Alberto through multiple heart surgeries and ongoing specialized care, including cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, specialized nurses, Child Life and therapists. His family has been by his side through every surgery and every decision.

Today, Alberto is 8 years old, doing well overall with his heart and getting ready to celebrate his birthday. His biggest wish? A trip to Disneyland ✨

We are grateful to be part of stories like Alberto’s and to support families through every stage of their heart journey.

We were delighted to welcome award-winning author Renée Watson to Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento!

Her visit was part of the “Words Take Wing” program, hosted by the UC Davis School of Education, and in partnership with Sutter, she read to pediatric patients at their bedside and in Sophie's Place, bringing creativity, comfort and joy to kids who otherwise wouldn’t be able to attend events like this.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this special visit possible. 💙

“I couldn’t eat in public without flinging food everywhere. I told myself I wasn’t ready for DBS. I didn’t think my Parkinson’s was ‘bad enough.’ But eventually, my quality of life was suffering, and I knew it was time.”

When John Crews held his newborn grandson for the first time, he couldn’t stop smiling. For years, Parkinson’s disease had made that moment impossible, until deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery at Sutter Health gave him back control.

Learn how this innovative procedure and new technology helped John reclaim mobility, independence and hope after years of decline: https://bit.ly/4ogcy4w.

💬 “When it hits, it hits fast. If something doesn’t look or feel right, don’t wait. Get care.”

For Carrie Detwiler, a minor cut turned into septic shock after a family trip to Hawaii. Emergency teams at Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento acted quickly with fluids, antibiotics and intensive care.

Sepsis can be difficult to diagnose, yet it’s more common than many realize: one in three patients who die in a hospital has sepsis during their stay. With prompt recognition and swift treatment, it can often be effectively managed.

Sutter Health is helping prevent serious infections by shifting from reactive treatment to proactive prevention — reducing avoidable hospitalizations and saving lives.

Carrie made a full recovery and now gives back as a volunteer with Sutter’s Patient Liaison program. 💙
