"The American Psychiatric Association estimates that one in 11 people will be diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) at least once in their lifetime. This number skyrockets for veterans who experience all kinds of traumas in the field. Veterans who have PTSD often experience intrusive thoughts, negative feelings, and vivid flashbacks..."

How the Yoga Seed lead me to Teacher Training
by Nick Nelson

Have you ever felt like you don’t fit in? Whether it was feeling awkward at your high school dance, being the quiet one at a big family gathering, or a lack of a sense of belonging among your friends?

If this is you, you are not alone. You are 1 of approximately 7.6 billion people in our diverse world feeling like they do not fit in in some area of their lives. You are unique. I want to help you see that you are gifted in an area that someone else may not be. We might not get every opportunity that we go out for, but we can adapt to life’s outcomes by being true and confident within ourselves.

If we over analyze, critique, or compare, we may never “fit in” and “a job you really wanted” may never happen, because the problem starts with how we view ourselves. People often turn away from their own healing, afraid of the vulnerability entailed, rather than address it directly.

Hello, I am Nick,

I am disciplined, a maximizer, faithful, and resilient. Here is why I chose Yoga Teacher Training at the Yoga Seed Collective.

TESTIMONY

In 2011, at 15 years old, I had a psychotic break due to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This altered my perception of what was real and made me question my sense of self. Not only did I lose 15 pounds when I was hospitalized, but I had an adverse reaction to medication. It gave me uncontrollable tremors and stiffness affecting my gross and fine motor skills.

Essentially, I had catatonia, paranoia, and a mental breakdown. My body was demanding I address buried psycho-emotional needs.

Remission from my psychotic break, PTSD, and Major Depressive Disorder diagnosis took a little over a year. Once discharged, I had outpatient therapy, family support, home hospital, and eventually I was able to return my passions of dancing and performing by 2012.

BACKGROUND

My testimony is what introduced me to the world of healing power. I worked my way through my bachelors in psychology at a non-profit crisis residence for adults. This introduced me to the perspective of the providers in addition to the patients.

I was able to see myself in client’s who heard voices that were not really there and I talked them through their symptoms of anxiety and hopelessness that followed.

Through these experiences I’ve learned that mental and medical health are deeply connected at our core.

"I am in the midst of this journey now....studying in my courses, taking any trainings I can find (and afford), working with a mentor, seeing clients, listening to podcasts, reading books, teaching classes, continuing my own self-work, and alchemizing my healing into an authentic offering for others." - Alexandra Carelli

Mental health can affect the way we think, feel, act, make decisions, relate to others and handle stress. Mental health can vary over time and across circumstances. It is normal for everyone to have good and bad days. On good days, we may feel like we are flexible and can adapt to many different stressors and circumstances (like school, work, relationships, and how we feel about ourselves). However, on bad days, we may feel like we can’t cope with the stressors in our lives and feel overwhelmed and stuck.
