Natomas Citizens for Flood Safety

Natomas Citizens for Flood Safety Let's Finish the Job We Started - Support Natomas Flood Safety With less than $40 million we can complete almost $780 million in remaining construction.

Since we decided in 2007 to strengthen the levees protecting Natomas, our federal and state partners have made significant changes in the standards needed to provide real flood safety. To protect our families, homes, and businesses from floods, we need to raise a small portion of the costs need to finish our levees. For Natomas homeowners, that is less than $60 per year - about 16 cents per day for a typical household. Compare that with current high cost of flood insurance, and the choice is very clear. If we complete the job we started and improve our levee system, we can reduce current flood insurance rates of $1,250 within five years. More importantly, if we complete this work we can achieve 200-year flood protection by 2018. Even the best insurance cannot provide flood protection and real safety for our families, homes, and businesses.

The House has enacted restrictions on earmarks so broad they are blocking funding for needed public safety projects, including a massive levee upgrade in Dan Lungren's district.

From Congresswoman Doris O. Matsui's page: The 6th Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina is a pressing reminder that we must finish the Spillway at Folsom Dam (the Joint Federal Project), follow through on our local levee improvements, and ensure local residents plan for natural disasters. I am committed to working toward this every day, as I know that together these projects will better protect Sacramento families from a potential flood.
