Connecting Legislators with Local Pharmacy Leaders

This week, Senator Suzette Valladares visited Acton Vale Pharmacy in Acton, where she met with Amma Amihyia, PharmD, and her team for an engaging and informative tour.

Dr. Amihyia shared firsthand the challenges independent pharmacies face in today’s regulatory and reimbursement environment, as well as their ongoing commitment to caring for vulnerable patients in their communities.

Senator Valladares and her team expressed deep appreciation for the warm welcome and valuable insights, sharing that the feedback has already been relayed to their legislative team in Sacramento.

What’s Next After SB 41?

The passage of SB 41 (Wiener) marked a turning point for California pharmacy. But as CPhA CEO Susan Bonilla reminds us, “It’s a very hopeful day,” not the finish line.

✅ In 2026, PBMs will begin operating under new licensing and transparency rules enforced by the Department of Managed Health Care.
✅ Pharmacists and patients can expect greater accountability, fairer reimbursements, and stronger oversight.
✅ CPhA will continue working closely with state agencies to ensure this reform brings meaningful change across every practice setting.

CalRx Initiative Update

Governor Gavin Newsom announced that CalRx-branded biosimilar insulin glargine pens will be available to consumers starting January 1, 2026, priced at no more than $11 per pen in a five pack.

California is the first and only state to contract for its own affordable insulin, a major step forward in improving patient access and affordability.

CPhA is proud to be part of this historic initiative, with two of our members, Dr. Albert Bach and Dr. Michelle Chu, serving as the only pharmacists on the CalRx Advisory Board. Their leadership ensures pharmacy has a strong voice in shaping healthcare solutions for all Californians.
