Fourteen years ago, baby Patrick spent his first days in the Sutter Memorial NICU after being born full term but facing serious complications from a placental abruption. While recovering in the ICU, his mom, Diane, drew strength from the message that hung above the sink: “Each day holds a possibility of a miracle.”

Patrick was one of the first babies to receive care using a cooling blanket — a treatment that helped save his life.

This September, Diane, Patrick and their family visited the new NICU at Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento — the place that now carries forward the legacy of where Patrick’s story began. They met with care teams, toured the space and delivered heartfelt care boxes from Diane’s nonprofit Angel of Ours to bring comfort and encouragement to families walking similar paths.

Stories like theirs remind us why we do what we do — celebrating every step, every milestone and every miracle. 💛

A special LEGO MRI set is helping young patients prepare for hospital procedures — and easing fears along the way. 💛

Designed by the LEGO Group in partnership with Starlight Children's Foundation, the set helps children understand what to expect before an MRI through creative, hands-on play.

At Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento, our Child Life team uses this unique tool to help kids like Jaxon — an 8-year-old bravely facing a rare cancer — feel calm and confident before their MRI scans. 🧩

“Play is one of the most important ways for children to learn, process, and express themselves. We’re absolutely seeing children have their anxiety reduced by play, especially with the MRI scanner.” - Sara Anderson, manager of integrated therapies at Sutter Children’s Center.

Born with truncus arteriosus (TA), a rare congenital heart defect, little Yoali underwent three lifesaving heart surgeries in her first few months of life — along with specialized care from our pediatric gastroenterology and cardiology teams.

During her nine-month stay at SMCS’s Anderson Luchetti Women’s and Children’s Center, her family found strength through the compassion of nurses, child life specialists and a spiritual care chaplain who cared for them every step of the way. Today, she continues to receive follow-up care at home — smiling and thriving.

Her father Jonathan shares: “Having my daughter home with us, seeing her smile and progress even after all she’s been through, has made my faith grow stronger.”

We are honored to be part of Yoali’s journey. 🩵

We’re jumping for joy over kangaroo care! 🦘

At Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento's Children's Center, we’re to support this special skin-to-skin bonding time between parents and babies. Kangaroo care helps regulate baby’s body temperature, heart rate, and breathing. It also fosters connection and supports milk production for moms.

Every day, we celebrate moments like these that help give babies the healthiest start in life. https://bit.ly/4jRI1b2

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation - Northern California Chapter recently hosted their Sacramento Great Strides Walk, one of nearly 300 walks held nationwide each year to raise funds and awareness for cystic fibrosis, a progressive genetic disease that affects the lungs and other organs.

Members of the SMCS Cystic Fibrosis & Pediatric Pulmonary Clinic joined families, friends, and supporters for a fun, hope-filled day rallying around the CF community.

These walks are a chance to come together, celebrate progress, and show support, one stride at a time.
