**In response to the current Coronavirus pandemic, I am scheduling only Telehealth Sessions (Either Video Chat or Phone) going forward. My priority is not only your mental health, but physical health and safety. I acknowledge that social distancing is key to preventing further spread of the virus, but mental health struggles do not disappear during times like these, which is why I am providing Telehealth until the current risk subsides and stabilizes. I am currently accepting new clients and am on the Magellan and Optum health insurance panels. Feel free to either visit my website natomaslmft.com and fill out the form for more information or call me at 530.830.1969

This is about support, strength, resilience and connection in times of stress, distance and worry. Let's do this together.

“Hope begins in the dark, the stubborn hope that if you just show up and try to do the right thing, the dawn will come. You wait and watch and work: you don’t give up.” – Anne Lamott

Keep going there is hope, help and ears to hear your struggles and triumphs.

I was given a helpful reminder about posting my takeaways from the Human Trafficking conference I attended in January. There were multiple speakers that shared insight and their real life experiences. It is important to not only help the current victims, but also identify possible victims of human trafficking. Risk factors of history of sexual abuse, trauma and more are some of the factors that put this population at risk. Additionally, addiction is a form of coping with trauma. The brain has been rewired and makes it difficult to cope any other way with the chronic and severe trauma an individual experiences when a part of this population. What to do? Inform yourself, engage with this population, reach out to those in need and remember it takes one person to provide unconditional positive regard to make a difference.

I just completed an article that I was invited to write for SacWellness. I believe trauma is a relevant topic in today's world and early intervention is important.

October is Pregnancy Loss Awareness Month as well as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Please take a moment to recognize in some way those that have been affected by either of these significant life events.

As a reminder, The T.H.R.I.V.E. On Group starts in November on Tuesdays from 7 to 9 pm. If you or any one you know has or is processing loss from pregnancy, my colleague (Cassandra Meredith, LCSW) and I would love to speak with you about the group. Email THRIVEOnGroup@gmail.com for more information or contact me via message or phone (530) 830-1969.

Let's change the conversation.

What is trauma informed care? Trauma informed care is about changing the conversation with people from "What is wrong with you" to "What happened to you". This reframe is important to understanding that mental health illness is about. Mental health is about understanding the originating events that a person has experienced throughout their life that have had adverse effects on their ability to perform daily tasks, motivation and so much more. So I ask you, What have you been through that is contributing to struggles that impact your relationships, ability to function and overall mood? Have more thoughts and questions? Feel free to message/call me to learn more about taking the next step in moving towards trauma informed care or obtaining help in moving through trauma, loss or grief that you have experienced.

Many people want to know..What is the importance of addressing trauma at a young age?

It is important to address trauma experienced early, due to the effects that unprocessed trauma has on the brain. The ACEs study is one of the most recent and important studies that has linked Adverse Childhood Events to various co-morbid physical conditions at a later age. It is important to take advantage of the brain's ability to build new neurons to react to triggers, trauma and emotions related to experiences that are triggering to help the youth have a healthier response when faced with memories related to loss, trauma or grief. I provide trauma informed care, adoption competent therapy (for caregivers and youth) and am in the process of pursuing my National Certification in TF-CBT. Trauma informed care changes the conversation from "What's wrong with you" to "What have you survived/been through" to help clients, their families and support networks understand the effects of trauma and process through it.
