What Does It Mean to Respect a Senior’s Wishes on Home Care?

You might consider getting help from home care providers when you observe that your aging loved one feels ill, living alone, or having a disability. While this is a genuine and valid intention, we encourage you not to overstep your loved one’s preferences.

Aim to seek their opinion on receiving home care assistance. Hearing what they want to say about the situation is a very respectful move because you recognize their voice in the decision-making. When you do this, there’s even a greater chance that they will also listen to your suggestion of getting home care assistants.

Preparing for a Senior-Friendly Home

When your parents are already in their senior years, it’s high time to re-arrange their place to become more senior-friendly. What does this kind of home look like?

Here are some general scenarios:

A. Doorways have ramps

B. Restrooms or bathrooms have grab bars

C. Toilets have adjustable seats

D. Senior’s room is relocated downstairs

E. Lighting is kept brighter

Are you making these kinds of transitions at home? These changes don’t have time periods, but the sooner you can implement, the faster you can reduce incidents at home.

Why Is Being Active Important for Seniors?

Older adults should always strive to stay active.
Leading an active lifestyle:

1. Improves muscle tone, bone strength, agility, and coordination. These are vital for fall prevention in seniors.

2. Stops muscle atrophy in seniors who have limited mobility

3. Is good for an older adult’s overall health. Engaging in physical activities helps keep their weight at a healthy level, heart health and blood sugar levels normal.

3. Boosts mood, mental health, and healing

4. Affects nighttime sleep positively

We encourage our senior residents to be active with our planned daily activities at Call It Home.

Helpful Pointers to Manage Sundowning

Dealing with sundowning – a common symptom among dementia and Alzheimer’s patients – is a challenge for caregivers. The few pointers below could help manage the symptom in your loved ones.

1. Balance their activities with their rest times. Avoid long daytime naps but don’t overtire them, either.

2. Shadows and day-to-night changes trigger sundowning. Prevent confusion by turning on the lights and drawing the blinds or curtains down.

3. Adopt a relaxed home atmosphere during the latter part of the day.

4. Be patient and calm in dealing with your loved one’s agitation.

If the condition persists, seek medical advice.

What Are the Effects of Social Isolation to Older Adults?

1. Social isolation contributes to loneliness. And loneliness could morph into depression.

2. Socially isolated older adults are 35% more likely to die within a 6-year span.

3. Their healthcare costs are also significantly higher with frequent hospitalizations and longer hospital stays.

4. These problems contribute significantly to cognitive decline.

5. They’re at high risk of engaging in harmful vices and become easy prey for abusers and scammers.

Senior care home living is a viable solution to social isolation. Aside from safety supervised care, they also have the opportunity of building relationships with other people their age.
