NorCal Physiotherapy and Sports Sciences

NorCal Physiotherapy and Sports Sciences Helping Active People Stay Active! Our belief is that rest and pain medication never completely resolves injury.

Telling you that the exercise is dangerous and to stop doing what you love is not acceptable. We remove the frustration and helplessness that is often experienced. We believe in empowering the individual so that they can experience not only quick relief but also long term improvement. We do this in 3 steps:
1:Alleviate the pain.
2:Fix the underlying cause.
3:Plan for the future. We get athletes of all ages and competitive levels back to the activities they love - quickly, completely, confidently.

Over-striding is like holding a bowling ball at arm’s length. Feels heavy, right?

Running works the same way. And we see a lot of runners get all worked up about overstriding! An easier approach we’ve found to solving this issue is focusing more on “landing CLOSER to the body” rather than underneath. Hold that bowling ball closer to your body and it feels a lot more manageable.

Small tweak, but definitely helps people who feel like this correction is an impossible task.

If your calves blow up during squats, this video can help.

Maybe you’re using your toes instead of your hips!
See how you Wesley’s knees drive too far forward and his heels come up? His calves are trying to do the job that his glutes and hammies should be doing.

Simple fix: break at the hips first.

How many did you count?

More importantly, could you pass this simple test?

For bjj athletes like this, stability matters when you’re:
fighting off a sweep, passing guard, scrambling. The better your control, the harder you are to move.

Hot take: the goal isn’t more gear 🤣

Your goal should be stronger feet. Better load tolerance. A body that can handle training.

And happy coincidence is that with those things- you can spend all your money buying allllllll the running shoes and not just one type!

But seriously, make sure you keep your eye on durability——— not dependence.

You aren’t the athlete you were before the injury.
Hard to hear, we know. BUT that doesn’t mean you can’t be a new version of yourself and come back better. And here’s where so many athletes get mixed up about this:
Trying to prove they still got it on day 1 back.
Is it an ego thing? Maybe. It is just the heart of an athlete? Probably. But while your brain says MAX OUT, your body’s saying “small baby steps”. So here’s a little tough love from Dr Caleb today for our injured people out there:
If your body is healing, recalibrating, and finding its new rythym, respect that. Small, slow steps aren’t a setback- they’re a strategy to that new version of yourself.
Build back better- not just faster.

Sometimes weightlifting isn’t about getting BIGGER.

Sometimes it’s about becoming:
- more capable
-more durable
-harder to break

Strength really does change the way you move through life.

03/04/2026

That wasn’t a strength issue.
*It was a stability issue*

Hypermobile athletes often rely on passive tension (ligaments + joint structure) instead of active muscular control- especially overhead.

Under heavy load?
That catches up fast. Mobility is great. Stability keeps you lifting!

The second clip is from a shoulder masterclass- if you want to join in on our next free masterclass to learn more about stability and control in your overhead lifts, RSVP at the link in our bio! It’s set for 3/28 at TGP CrossFit in Roseville 🎉
