Say Bye Bye Bye to Dr Shelby as she leaves for now to go on maternity leave! Do not fret, she will be back in the summertime after she has welcomed her baby girl into the world. Talk about a full circle moment! Momma Rebel came to see Dr Shelby today and we wanted to be sure to take a photo of her with her statue in our serenity garden ❤️ Rebel was our chosen representative for the AKC hound group as she was one of our many great success stories we’ve had at Kokopelli. Most of you know Dr Shelby’s basset Ned, well here’s the beautiful gal who delivered him and many other amazing dual champions into this world🐾 be sure to come check out our other statues in the garden, all honoring a special Kokopelli patient ❤️

We are very excited to announce that Dr. Brittany Shumack will be joining our team on January 26th!

Dr. Brittany Shumack grew up in Alabama and earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. During her time at Auburn, she served as president of the Student Theriogenology Club and was recognized with the Proficiency in Theriogenology Award during her clinical year.

After graduation, Dr. Shumack began her career in Colorado, providing both reproductive and general practice veterinary services. She quickly became a trusted partner to many canine and feline breeders in the region, known for her compassion, dedication, and commitment to building lasting client relationships. Her outstanding work earned her recognition as a finalist for the 2024 Westminster Kennel Club Veterinarian of the Year—an honor based on nominations from her clients and colleagues.

Dr. Shumack remains actively involved with the Society for Theriogenology and is currently completing a mentorship residency toward Diplomate status with the American College of Theriogenologists. She is deeply passionate about the connection between reproductive health, overall wellness, and genetic preservation, as well as about advancing education and client communication in her field.

At Kokopelli Veterinary Center, Dr. Shumack looks forward to continuing her professional growth, supporting breeders throughout the region, and rekindling her work in equine reproduction.

Outside of the clinic, Dr. Shumack enjoys spending time outdoors with her husband and two children or attending dog shows with her beloved English Setters.

We’d like to take this time to congratulate not only little Miss Hallie from on finding out she’s carrying a litter of sweet pups but also our very own Dr Shelby who’s also expecting this spring! Seems fitting she’d be whelping around the same time as some of her favorite patients 😉🥰 Don’t worry, she’ll be back after maternity leave to keep seeing all of our fabulous clients and their pets! Be sure to stop by before she takes a break to prepare for the littlest Shelby to arrive!

Did you know we offer a variety of reproductive based surgeries? How about laparoscopic ovariectomies (removal of the ovaries), laparoscopic abdominal cryptorchid surgery, and are working towards offering laparoscopic assisted gastropexy as well? Here’s one of Dr Shelby’s most recent patients showing off her cute little incision sites and enjoying her reduced recovery time. Vinnie is just one of many LOVE spays we’ve done here in our clinic.
