Meningococcal disease is rare. But when it happens, it can turn serious fast.
It can lead to meningitis or a bloodstream infection. In some cases, it can become life-threatening in as little as 24 hours.
College students who live in group settings are at higher risk. That includes residence halls, shared apartments, and close social circles.
Common symptoms can include:
• High fever
• Stiff neck
• Headache
• Vomiting
• Extreme tiredness
• A purplish rash
Staying up to date on meningococcal vaccines is one of the best ways to protect yourself. You may need more than one type of vaccine for full protection.
