H.R. 1 — legislation signed into law on July 1, 2025 — delayed key federal rules meant to make it easier for people to enroll in Medicare Savings Programs. But states are not powerless.

Learn how states can still move forward with policies that simplify enrollment and help older adults access vital financial help with Medicare costs in Justice in Aging's recent issue brief: https://justiceinaging.org/final-rule-enrollment-in-medicare-savings-programs/

⚠️ Important Medi-Cal Update for 2026 ⚠️

As of January 1, 2026, California is reinstating a $130,000 asset limit for many Medi-Cal programs—after being the first state to eliminate asset tests just three years ago.

What this means:
✔️ Current Medi-Cal enrollees will need to verify assets at their first renewal in 2026
✔️ New applicants after January 1, 2026 must report assets
✔️ Certain assets count, including cash, bank accounts, second vehicles, and second homes
✔️ Some people may be able to spend down assets to stay eligible

Learn what counts, who’s affected, and what steps you can take in Justice in Aging’s helpful FAQ 👉 https://justiceinaging.org/reinstatement-of-medi-cal-asset-limit-faq

Cashiers, you can save the holidays! Did you know that scammers trick seniors to buy gift cards for fake emergencies? You can play a huge role in stopping these scammers and protecting people.

Here’s how cashiers can help:

🚫 Pause the purchase: If a customer seems confused or upset while buying large amounts of gift cards, gently ask if someone told them to make the purchase.
💬 Start the conversation: Explain that government agencies, tech companies, and legitimate businesses never ask for payment with gift cards.
🧾 Post reminders: Display signs near gift card racks warning about scams.
📞 Encourage reporting: Suggest contacting local law enforcement if they are worried.

A simple question at the checkout could save someone from losing their savings.
Report any Medicare fraud to our California Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) at 1-855-613-7080.

New Medicaid work requirements set to take effect at the end of 2026 introduce complex rules and paperwork that could cause millions of eligible Americans to lose their health care. However, states can take action to ease these administrative hurdles, for example by allowing self-reporting as verification of medical exemptions.

Our partners at Justice in Aging have a new toolkit offers guidance to help states prevent wrongful Medicaid terminations and promote the health of older adults, people with disabilities, and their caregivers.
