A statement from American Academy of Pediatrics President, Dr. Susan J. Kressly:
The decision by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to downgrade its recommendations to protect infants from hepatitis B is a dangerous move that will harm children.
The American Academy of Pediatrics continues to recommend routine hepatitis B vaccination for all newborns: All babies should receive a first dose of the hepatitis B vaccine within 24 hours of birth, a second dose at one to two months, and a third dose at six months. The pacing of these doses has been rigorously tested and proven to be safe and effective over several decades.
Vaccinating all newborns against hepatitis B effectively prevents transmission of the virus to newborns during childbirth, supports them to build immunity against potential childhood infections, and ensures long-term protection into adulthood from a virus that can cause serious liver disease and liver cancer. Infants and children can be exposed to this virus by close caregivers who may not know they are infected. Delaying the birth dose of the hepatitis B vaccine has no clear benefits and leaves children vulnerable to infection.
A new study in Pediatrics found that twelve-year-olds who owned smartphones were more likely to experience depression and obesity and not get enough sleep than their peers without one. Consistent communication with children and teens about smartphones and screen time can help make sure that phones don’t crowd out important activities like exercise, sleep, and quality time with friends and family. Hand, foot, and mouth disease is on the move in the Sacramento region! Keep an eye out for new rashes, fever, and sores to the back of the throat.
Hand, Foot, and Mouth disease is an easily transmitted viral infection. Children pass it to one another, especially in daycare settings, but caregivers may contract it too!

From the American Academy of Pediatrics.
"Harmful myths suggesting that vaccines cause autism sow fear and distrust in vaccines, ultimately jeopardizing the great progress we’ve made in preventing serious childhood diseases. For decades, scientists have studied the potential causes of autism, and have repeatedly found no credible link between childhood vaccines and autism. Any effort to misrepresent sound, strong science poses a threat to the health of children and does a disservice to our autistic community.

"Though preliminary studies have suggested the potential benefit of leucovorin for some autistic children, the evidence base remains too limited to support a wider recommendation. Questions on its benefits, dosing, appropriate monitoring and potential long-term impacts remain unanswered. Larger trials are needed to determine whether leucovorin is a safe and effective option for the autistic pediatric population."
Autistic children are valued members of our communities, deserving of support driven by high-quality research. Though preliminary studies have suggested the potential benefit of leucovorin for some autistic children, the evidence base remains too limited to support a wider recommendation. Questions on its benefits, dosing, appropriate monitoring and potential long-term impacts remain unanswered. Larger trials are needed to determine whether leucovorin is a safe and effective option for the autistic pediatric population.
AAP will update its guidance as evidence is compiled and encourages pediatricians to engage in shared decision-making with families asking about leucovorin while providing clear information about the evidence available and the potential risks. Learn more at the link below. https://bit.ly/3WupJU7

"The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) reaffirms the safety and benefits of acetaminophen use during pregnancy.
More than two decades of research have found no causal link between acetaminophen use during pregnancy and autism, ADHD, or intellectual disability in children. Acetaminophen continues to be an important and safe option for managing pain and fever in pregnancy—conditions that can pose serious risks to pregnant patients and their fetuses if left untreated.
