Today we recognize Kwanzaa, a celebration of values.
Did you know? Kwanzaa isn’t a religious holiday, but a cultural one. It begins December 26 and ends January 1st. The holiday’s 7 days celebrate the Seven Principles (Nguzo Saba) of African and African American culture focusing on 1 principle each day – that’s why the kinara has seven candles.

The Seven Principles are: Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity), and Imani (Faith). There are feasts, music, dance and more and ends with a day dedicated to reflection and recommitment to the Seven Principles. What a beautiful and meaningful way to enter a new year! Today we recognize Christmas, rooted in traditions and togetherness.

Did you know? There are many different symbols of Christmas which can vary greatly depending on your families’ traditions. One of the many traditions that can be observed is the Christmas pickle.

On Christmas Eve, someone hides a pickle ornament on the tree. Then, on Christmas morning, the challenge begins to be the first person to find the Christmas pickle. In some versions of this tradition, the first person to find it has bragging rights, or they could also be blessed with good luck for the year, or be given an extra present.

Its origins are unknown, but there are plenty of stories about where it came from.
The most plausible theory is that it was a popular ornament from Germany sold by Woolworths in the 1880’s! To read more about this tradition you can visit https://www.rd.com/article/christmas-pickle/

Today is the winter solstice!

Did You Know? The winter solstice – the longest night of the year – has been celebrated since ancient times all over the world and influenced the current traditions of Christmas and Hanukkah.

The winter solstice falls on December 20 or 21 in the northern hemisphere. In the Northern Hemisphere, the winter solstice happens when the sun is directly over the Tropic of Capricorn, located 23.5 degrees south of the equator (think of this as an imaginary line crossing South America, Africa and Australia. For several days around the two solstices each year, the sun’s appearance on the horizon at sunrise and sunset seems to occur at the same spot before drifting north or south.

Following the winter solstice, days grow longer and so celebrations focus rebirth, renewal and hope. Celebrating can include feasting, bonfires, burning candles, and decorating with evergreens. Enjoy the winter solstice with some stargazing, nature walks, lighting a candle, or taking time for self-reflection.
