During the newborn assessment, providers check heart rate, breathing, tone, reflexes, and overall transition to life outside the womb. Listening to that tiny heartbeat helps ensure baby is adjusting beautifully earthside.

A Cook catheter is a mechanical method of cervical ripening used during labor induction.

Two small balloons are inserted through the cervix and gently filled with saline to apply steady pressure on both sides of the cervix β€” encouraging dilation without medication.

It’s often used when the cervix isn’t quite ready, helping the body begin the labor process in a gradual, controlled way.

If contractions aren’t picking up or the body isn’t responding, it can also be used alongside Pitocin (oxytocin) to support progression while the cervix continues to dilate.
