Two years ago, Discover & Recover St. Johns County opened its doors in St. Augustine with one mission: meet people where they are and make sure no one has to navigate recovery alone.

We’re celebrating two years of showing up with education, support, and hope for individuals and families impacted by substance use disorder—and we’re deeply grateful to everyone who has walked alongside us, partnered with us, and trusted us along the way.

This anniversary is a milestone, but it’s also a reminder: the need is still here, and recovery is always worth fighting for.

Finding Hope and Recovery with Flagler OARS: Chris’s Journey

Chris didn’t come to Flagler Open Arms Recovery Services (OARS) searching for recovery. He arrived exhausted, hoping only for help with gas and fixing his car. But what he found was so much more—a safe place, a listening ear, and a team who saw his worth, even when he couldn’t see it himself.

When Chris walked through our doors, he was welcomed by a Certified Recovery Peer Specialist (CRPS) who listened with compassion and understanding. As Chris shared his immediate needs, the CRPS gently explained what makes OARS unique: we are people with lived experience of substance use disorder, ready to walk alongside others on their journey. That honesty broke down Chris’s walls, making it safe for him to share the truth about where he was and what he was facing.

Chris was scared—worried about leaving everything behind, uncertain about housing after treatment, and unsure if things could ever get better. Our CRPS met him where he was, offering real options for safe housing, guiding him step by step, and never letting him feel alone. Even when insurance issues threatened to block his treatment, OARS didn’t give up. We advocated for Chris, and together, we found a way forward.

For 24 hours, Chris leaned on OARS whenever fear crept in. Each call was met with hope, encouragement, and the unwavering belief that he was worth fighting for. After treatment, Chris found a home in an Oxford House and continued working with his CRPS—setting goals, building the tools and support he needed, and creating a life he’s proud of. He’s showing up for his kids, going to work, and finally has a safe place to call home. His dream of becoming a millionaire is still in progress, but today, he’s grateful for every small victory.

Stories like Chris’s are only possible because people like you believe in second chances. Flagler OARS relies on the generosity of our community to keep our doors open and our services free for anyone in need. Your annual donation isn’t just a gift—it’s a lifeline. Please consider becoming an annual donor. Your support ensures that OARS can continue providing a safe space, compassionate support, and real solutions for people and families in Flagler County. Spring Break can be a blast — and it can also bring extra pressure, triggers, and risky situations. If you’re in recovery (or supporting someone who is), you don’t have to “white-knuckle” your way through it.

Here are a few ways to protect your peace this week:

→Make a simple plan (where you’re going, who you’re with, how you’re getting home)
→Bring your own non-alcoholic drink option
→Have an exit strategy (it’s okay to leave early)
→Check in with a safe person before and after events
→Choose one recovery-centered activity each day (meeting, walk, journaling, prayer/meditation)

Flagler OARS is here with peer support, encouragement, and resources for individuals and families impacted by substance use disorder. You are not alone.
Reach out if you need support — we’ve got you. 💙
