Finding Hope and Recovery with Flagler OARS: Chris’s Journey
Chris didn’t come to Flagler Open Arms Recovery Services (OARS) searching for recovery. He arrived exhausted, hoping only for help with gas and fixing his car. But what he found was so much more—a safe place, a listening ear, and a team who saw his worth, even when he couldn’t see it himself.
When Chris walked through our doors, he was welcomed by a Certified Recovery Peer Specialist (CRPS) who listened with compassion and understanding. As Chris shared his immediate needs, the CRPS gently explained what makes OARS unique: we are people with lived experience of substance use disorder, ready to walk alongside others on their journey. That honesty broke down Chris’s walls, making it safe for him to share the truth about where he was and what he was facing.
Chris was scared—worried about leaving everything behind, uncertain about housing after treatment, and unsure if things could ever get better. Our CRPS met him where he was, offering real options for safe housing, guiding him step by step, and never letting him feel alone. Even when insurance issues threatened to block his treatment, OARS didn’t give up. We advocated for Chris, and together, we found a way forward.
For 24 hours, Chris leaned on OARS whenever fear crept in. Each call was met with hope, encouragement, and the unwavering belief that he was worth fighting for. After treatment, Chris found a home in an Oxford House and continued working with his CRPS—setting goals, building the tools and support he needed, and creating a life he’s proud of. He’s showing up for his kids, going to work, and finally has a safe place to call home. His dream of becoming a millionaire is still in progress, but today, he’s grateful for every small victory.
