In the height and intensity of trauma it's not uncommon for people to say things that are hurtful. If this happens to you, the best thing is to not get dramatic with it. Don’t turn the tables and say what she is doing wrong. She wouldn’t be in that position if it wasn’t for what you did.

Light is a powerful force. It makes it easier to see. It provides energy and warmth. We also talk about it a lot in recovery because you have to bring things into the light if you want to change. I'm thankful for beautiful views like this one and for the way it reminds me about the benefits light can bring to our lives.

Recovery is not always an easy process. It takes vulnerability to be open and honest. There will be slips. It requires a lot of work, focus, and consistency. Despite the challenges, it is possible and I'm thankful that I'm able to see that with so many different people.

Halloween chihuahua = not scary. Recovery = not scary. Putting in the work for recovery does take time and effort but it doesn't need to be a scary process. Find those who you can reach out to and be open with, and rely on that support as you learn to overcome your addiction.

If you struggle with addiction, remember the day that you were hopeless and then you decided to reach out. You felt wonderful. You felt hope. You felt light. You can develop those skills to reach out instead of going back to the acting out.

For anyone struggling with a spouse or loved one in recovery, I want you to know that healing is possible. It can take some time but does get better, especially as you see them getting the social skills to hear your pain.

It's one of the questions I frequently hear when I first meet with someone. They want to know why they can't stop or why this has been going on and on. The answer is the addiction cycle. They are stuck in a pattern and have to learn to make changes that will break the cycle and help them to better manage themselves.

Our brains want to find a way to make us feel better. For addicts, this means they have usually created a super highway to those positive feelings when they turn to their addiction. Part of recovery is changing the direction of that highway and learning how to turn to real, healthy relationships that can eventually replace those addictive habits.
