Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is a very unique speech sound disorder that can have significant effects on a child’s ability to say what they want to say.
🌟 In addition to the three listed on this slide, some other common characteristics often seen in a child with CAS include:
🗣 inconsistent errors
🗣 errors on vowels
🗣 limited number of consonants and vowels that a child can produce
🗣 difference in prosody or intonation
🗣 slow rate of speech
🗣 more difficulty with speech productions when prompted on demand (as opposed to automatic or volitional speech)
🧠 Can a child with CAS learn to talk and communicate with others? ABSOLUTELY! Is it more challenging for them than other children? Yep, sure is. But let us tell you, it sure leads to some of the most resilient, brave, and hard working kids we know!
