With repetition the brain creates neural pathways (auto-pilot). These pathways are similar to tire marks in soil. Each time a vehicle passes along the same pathway the tire marks or ruts get deeper and more defined. This is how the brain creates memories, skills, habits, and ways of coping.

The more you use a neural pathway the more prominent it becomes. Those neural pathways that are not used will ultimately fade away; use it or lose it.

This is the key to the hope behind the change; that the brain can change and the individual can control it.
