The Town of Port Royal is recognizing World Doula Week, and we invite our community to be there.

On Wednesday, March 11 at 6:30 PM, a proclamation will be read honoring the role doulas play in supporting mothers, babies, and families.

Research shows that doula support is linked to
• lower cesarean rates
• reduced risk of preterm birth
• improved maternal mental health
• higher breastfeeding success
• stronger communication between families and healthcare teams

This moment is about honoring birth workers and strengthening maternal health in our community.

As birthworker we are equipped with more than just a birth plan. We have tools to support families through a community health lens.

Adding Mental Health First Aid to our toolkit strengthens our ability to:
• Recognize early signs of postpartum depression, anxiety, and mood disorders
• Respond without judgment
• De-escalate crisis situations
• Connect families to appropriate professional support
• Protect the emotional wellbeing of mothers, fathers, and children

Support is sacred—but can also be skilled.

In a region where maternal health disparities are real, we don’t guess. We get trained. We prepare. We build capacity for our community.

Tameka and Deidra are now doulas trained in Mental Health First Aid adding evidence-based mental health assessment, crisis response, and referral protocols to our doula toolkit.
