On Sunday morning, the Smithtown Department of Public Safety proudly supported a multi-agency water and ice rescue training at the Long Beach boat ramp.

Working together, personnel from the Nissequogue Fire Department, St. James Volunteer Fire Department, Nissequogue Police Department, Kings Park Fire Department, and our Harbormasters conducted several evolutions of various rescue scenarios out on the water.

The addition of freezing temperatures, wind, and ice to already difficult scenarios made for a great day of training on these high risk, low frequency events.

Great job by all!

This past weekend was a busy one, with back-to-back days of Ice Rescue Training. The first day, there was a team of St James FD members training under the watchful eye of Past Chief and Smithtown Harbor Master, Mike Grayson, at Cordwood Beach. Day 2 was training at Long Beach; joining us were members of the Nissequogue Fire Department and the Kings Park Fire Department. We were assisted by the Smithtown Harbor Masters. Always training and ready to help when needed.

The Town of Smithtown is launching a month-long Fire Safety & Prevention Awareness initiative, sharing important tips and reminders for everyone to protect themselves, their homes, and their families.
With the recent winter storms and significant snowfall across our area, it's important to ensure that snow and ice are cleared from hydrants, walkways, and exits so emergency responders can reach your home quickly and your family can exit safely if needed. Keep fire hydrants near your home visible and clear of snow, landscaping, and/or debris so firefighters can access them quickly in an emergency. Clear snow from egress paths to allow for safe exit away from an emergency; safe access to your home for first responders is paramount in the event of an emergency.

At 1:56 am, we received a call for a structure fire at Woodlot Rd in the Head of the Harbor. Standard procedure calls for mutual aid from our neighboring departments. Upon arrival, Asst Chief Eric Orth, along with Nesconset Asst Chief Joe Capogna, were met with a heavy smoke condition and a working structure fire (13/35) was transmitted. Nesconset's Engine, 441, stretched the first line to begin knocking down the flames. St James Engines 432, 431, and 433 followed along with Ladder Truck 437 and our ambulance crew. Over 2000' of hose was dropped to supply the engines with a flow of water!
Other mutual aid came from Smithtown Fire Department, Stony Brook Fire Department, Setauket FD and Nissequogue Fire Department. By 3:45 a.m., all mutual aid departments had been released.

Thanks to all our neighbors for their assistance in the wee hours of the morning.

Courtesy Reminder:
When digging out from the blizzard, please remember to keep fire hydrants clear of snow and debris.

Taking a few extra minutes to shovel out hydrants near your home — clearing at least 3 feet around them — ensures firefighters can access water quickly in an emergency. Seconds matter when responding to a fire.

A clear hydrant could save your home… or your neighbor’s. It could save a life.

Thank you for doing your part to keep Smithtown safe.

BLIZZARD SAFETY – CURBSIDE ALERT ❄🚨

As snow continues to fall, please help our Highway and Public Safety crews keep roads clear and safe:

🚫 No street parking — Vehicles left on roadways may be fined or towed.
🅿️ Municipal parking lots are open for alternate parking.
🗑️ Remove garbage bins, bags, brush, and basketball hoops from the curb.

Keeping streets clear allows plows and emergency responders to operate efficiently and safely throughout the storm.

Your cooperation makes a difference. Thank you for doing your part to keep Smithtown safe.

Please stay home unless you're an essential worker or plow/snow removal operator. By doing so you may help make tonight a "boring" night for us who will be doing a "stand-by" at our station.

Thank you!

Another of our very own!! Congratulations Chief!
