This is so important. Learning how to exercise with hormones in mind has been key to my health. If you have a thyroid issue, trust me, less is more!
Or your two+ hour sessions at the gym. Or waking up at 5am to workout on 6 hours of sleep. Or running more than 2 miles daily.
If you want to completely mess up your hormones, continue on. But chances are you’re doing all the things and still not getting results you want. Or experiencing some form of gut and/or hormone imbalances.
Repeat after me:
We don’t fight stress with stress.
Read that again.
Super intense exercise adds significant stress to your body. Add in the fact that you’re overbooking yourself, ignoring your gut dysfunction, have autoimmune disease, and trying to be a superhero, and you have a recipe for disaster.
And don’t get me started on what under-eating is doing to this mess!
I cannot tell you how many times we tell patients to workout less and eat more. Yep you read that right. And every time they say, “But I will gain weight!” Spoiler alert. They don’t. Because what they were doing wasn’t working anyway. And guess what? They finally lose weight.
Our mindset is totally backwards. If we’re not lying in our sweat completely dead after a workout—it wasn’t intense enough. And this is so far from the truth! That literally just took you further from your goals.
This all goes back to what we keep saying:
Your body has to feel safe. If it constantly has to put out fires, things will fall apart. When we honor our body for all it must do, and give it the support it needs—hormone production, fertility, a balanced thyroid, improved insulin resistance, fat loss, and nutrient absorption all take place.
So what is the correct exercise prescription without taxing your body? A balance of strength training and movement. And no, I don’t care that you can hang clean two humans, 57 times in 34 seconds, for 6 rounds. Lifting weights in a functional way, gives your muscles the appropriate workout. Add in yoga, a walk, or dance party with your kids for some simple daily movement.
So please, give your body a little love and less stress. Your hormones will reward you.
