Our Story
In 1913, Daniel Morton, MD came to the St. Joseph, Buchanan Co, MO area. As a physician, he was concerned about the medical treatment of the poor. Through many efforts Dr. Morton worked to develop Missouri State Statute, RSMO 205.770, that allowed county governments to create a 'Social Welfare Board of (name of county)'. The idea was to form an alliance between city and county governments to support free medical care to those less fortunate in the community. Additionally, local doctors, hospitals, and nurses would volunteer their time at the clinic to administer healthcare to the patients of the clinic. The Social Welfare Board continues Dr. Morton's vision and passion to provide high-quality healthcare to the residents of the City of St. Joseph and Buchanan County, MO. We have many partners who help us in our efforts. We are grateful for the contiued support we receive in our community!
