Big cheers for Jensen and Rakiyah, seniors at Lafayette High School, who recently organized a donation drive to support the women and families we serve.

This all started as a class give-back project, thanks to Mrs. Slankey, who clearly said, “Let’s do something good and make it count.” And wow—did it count.

Jensen and Rakiyah didn’t just participate… they took the lead. They showed up with big hearts, real effort, and the kind of initiative that makes you believe the future is in skillful hands (and probably running the world sooner than we think).

Huge thanks to Mrs. Slankey for encouraging her class to give back—and to Jensen and Rakiyah for proving that kindness + leadership = pretty amazing things.

Keep being awesome. We’re big fans.

On this past Wednesday our staff participated in an in-service to review our wins in 2025, talk about 2026 goals, and took a little bit of time to reflect on what it takes to keep an optimistic, positive outlook doing the work that we do, facing the challenges that we face.

We are so thankful for our YWCA community and the ability to grow and change together!

Today we’re celebrating 1 year of Jade Lashley, who stepped into the role of Community Support Manager and immediately proved she was ready for it — even on the days when no one hands you an instruction manual.

Taking over a leadership role comes with curveballs, and Jade has handled them with heart, humor, and a “we’ll figure it out” attitude. She shows up ready to support her team, problem-solve on the fly, and keep things moving — usually with a smile and a laugh somewhere in the mix.

Jade brings energy, compassion, and a genuine love for this work. She knows how to get things done while still making people feel comfortable, supported, and seen — which is no small feat in this role.

Jade, thank you for an awesome first year and for stepping into leadership with confidence, care, and a good sense of humor. We’re lucky to have you — and we’re excited for what’s next.

Celebrating 8 Years of Lois Griffin

Today, we’re celebrating 8 years of Lois Griffin, whose work in Housekeeping helps make our shelter feel like a place of safety, dignity, and care.

Lois does so much more than keep the building clean. She is always willing to step in and help wherever she’s needed, and her love for the YWCA is felt in the quiet, everyday ways she shows up. The rooms she prepares, the spaces she cares for, and the extra hands she offers all help create an environment where women and families can finally exhale.

When someone walks into our shelter carrying fear, exhaustion, or uncertainty, the comfort of a clean, welcoming space matters more than people realize. That sense of calm and care is part of Lois’s impact.

Lois, thank you for 8 years of dedication, heart, and unwavering support of this mission. The work you do helps people begin again — and we are truly grateful for you.

Today we wanted to shine a spotlight on food security and sometimes the lack thereof.

Food brings a sense of stability and comfort and at the YWCA, we try to provide that same sense of safety and warmth.

And that brings us to Jenn! Jenn makes everything from scratch in our kitchen (peep the pictures). We love and appreciate the joy she brings to the food she makes, we know you can taste it too.

Show Jenn some love in the comments so she can know just how much she is appreciated, not just at the YWCA, but all across the community.

Today, we’re honoring 6 years of Latanya Farmer, one of our Shelter Advocates who quietly shows up every day for women and families in their hardest moments.

Latanya isn’t flashy about the work she does, and she doesn’t love having her picture taken, but her care runs deep. You see it in the way she listens, the way she steps in when things feel heavy, and the steady presence she brings when someone needs to feel safe.

Her heart for this work is genuine, and it shows in both big and small ways. And if you’re lucky enough to catch one of her peach cobblers, you know that care doesn’t stop at the job description — it shows up with a little extra love.

Latanya, thank you for 6 years of dedication, consistency, and compassion. We’re grateful for you — exactly as you are.

Dr. King’s vision for a society rooted in equality and respect continues to inspire movements for justice worldwide. Acknowledging this legacy involves more than remembrance; it calls for active engagement in building inclusive communities where dignity and opportunity are accessible to all. Together we can build a world where justice, freedom and dignity for all is a reality.

Our first-ever Whacky Winter Event was truly special, and it only happened because our community came together with donations. Together, we gave away 573 pieces of clothing to individuals in our programs. That’s warmth, dignity, and one less worry during a heavy season.

A huge shout-out to Regina Overman, our behind-the-scenes rockstar, whose organization and heart helped make this event happen. And yes… Kristina Nicholson may have taken her “sorting” role very seriously. There may have been outfit checks. There was definitely laughter. Research was conducted.

Women left with full bags and huge smiles. This is why we do this work.

And if we’re being honest… this won’t be our last Whacky event.
