Mental Illness Awareness Week Day 3: Bipolar Disorder
For Day 3 of Mental Illness Awareness Week, we’re shedding light on bipolar disorder, a condition affecting around 3.3 million Americans in a given year.
Bipolar disorder is characterized by extreme shifts in mood and energy, ranging from periods of mania (or hypomania) to periods of depression. These shifts can be disruptive, leading to impulsive behavior and difficulty functioning in daily life.
Recognizing the Cycles:
Mania/Hypomania (The "Highs"):
—Excessive energy, activity, or restlessness
—Racing thoughts and pressured speech
—Extreme "high" or euphoric feelings
—Decreased need for sleep
Depression (The "Lows"):
—Persistent sad, anxious, or "empty" mood
—Loss of pleasure or interest in activities
—Fatigue and difficulty concentrating
—Sleeping too much or too little
The good news is that people with bipolar disorder can achieve stability and lead fulfilling lives. Both psychotherapy and medication are highly effective in managing these mood cycles.
