October is Down Syndrome Awareness month. Originally established in the 1980s, this month is set aside to raise understanding of Down syndrome, increase public awareness, and to advocate for acceptance of individuals living with Down syndrome.
Our vision at the Down Syndrome Association of Pittsburgh is a community in which all of its citizens appreciate and benefit from the diversity of the people who live there, including those with Down syndrome. A place where we are all accepted and valued for our unique abilities and contributions and are guaranteed the opportunity and choice to create our own pathways to our definition of a successful life.
There are so many ways to get involved and spread awareness with DSAP and in your community:
-Join DSAP on 10/15 at the 29th Annual Pittsburgh Buddy Walk at Schenley Plaza as we unite to celebrate individuals with Down syndrome: www.ds-stride.org/pghbuddywalk.
-Check out DSAP's Resources page to learn about Down syndrome & Autism, advocacy, entrepreneurship, toolkits, book recommendations and more: www.dsapgh.org/what-we-do/resources.html.
-Check out the National Down Syndrome Society's Down Syndrome Awareness Month resources (including a 21 Day Inclusion Challenge and editable Down Syndrome Awareness Month facts cards to share on your social media): https://ndss.org/down-syndrome-awareness-month.
No matter what you do this month, it is a great time to take a moment and appreciate whoever it is who has Down syndrome and has touched your life.
