Alateen is for young people and teenagers whose lives have been affected by someone else's drinking. Alateens do not let the alcoholic dictate whether they attend a meeting.
There is always a way. ❤️

“When I was a freshman I noticed that some of my friends had parents who suffered from alcoholism. I invited them to come with me to my Alateen meeting. When their parents found out, they refused to let my friends go. I wondered if we could start an Alateen meeting at school during the day, so I started a petition among all of the students in our school. To my surprise, a lot of kids signed the petition. In fact, almost three-quarters of my school signed it. The principal gave us permission. Two Al-Anon members who completed our area certification process agreed to be our Group Sponsors. Fifty kids showed up at the first meeting. Now we have several sessions during the week, and a lot of kids go.”

Is your group still meeting as scheduled?

When schedules shift due to holidays or time off, a little communication can make a big impact. It could mean the difference between a newcomer feeling discouraged or finding that help and hope we feel in Al-Anon.

You can help families find hope for the first time by:

• Updating your meeting listing on local and World Service Office (WSO) websites
• Notifying your District or Al-Anon Information Service (AIS) of schedule changes
• Informing the venue where your meeting is held and posting a sign in a highly visible location
• Providing alternative meeting resources, such as information about electronic meetings or a list of additional meetings in the local area

You can update your group info anytime, at:

“When I begin to worry that I am not doing a good job, I ask ‘How Important Is It?’ Most of the time, I realize that the size of my worry is way bigger than the importance of the issue. Practicing ‘How Important Is It?’ has silenced my inner perfectionist and allowed serenity to blossom in my service and in my life.”

BEAUTIFULLY explained. Thank you, Carl Jung. These are the roots of Al-Anon's 12 Steps of Recovery.

In Al-Anon, we "drink" out of others by putting them in the place of our Higher Power. By seeking a greater connection with our Higher Power, we replace our emotional "craving" with the peace and serenity of union with God.

“I went to an interview for a job. During the interview, I gave every reason why I wasn’t qualified for it while the kind gentleman just listened. After I finished, he smiled and asked me if I was an adult child of an alcoholic. I was surprised by the question and a bit miffed that he would ask such a personal question. However, I told him that my father had been an alcoholic. I also asked him why he wanted to know. He said he thought I had the characteristics of an adult child. I asked for an explanation because I had no clue what he meant by adult child. He said alcoholism is a family disease that affects everyone in it and that family members often develop certain characteristics to cope with the disease. I explained that my father had passed away and I didn't feel that his drinking had any impact on me. He handed me a pamphlet which explained the disease. It showed the different characteristics and explained them. I was amazed that my family fit the description like a glove. I was the lost child—withdrawn, emotionally distant, aloof, and very independent. I could no longer deny that I was, in fact, greatly affected by the disease of alcoholism.”

“By the time I came to Al-Anon, both of the alcoholics in my life had passed away. I initially rejected the idea of attending Al-Anon meetings because the alcoholics no longer were in my life. Because of the trauma I had experienced in living with an alcoholic spouse I decided I should learn about the disease of alcoholism. In doing Step Four, I realized how someone else’s disease had affected me.”
