đŸ‡ș🇾 This Veteran’s Day, one thing that we can actually DO for our veterans and their families (instead of just saying “thanks”) is to make sure that they have access to the high-quality healthcare services that they need and deserve.

đŸ€Š For over 3 years now, we (and other independent pharmacies across the U.S.) have been unable to serve military members and their families after Express Scripts terminated contracts with over 15,000 indys. This has left veterans without the option of getting prescriptions and care at the local pharmacy of their choice as well as accounted for BILLIONS of taxpayer dollars wasted, to boot.

📈 A bucketload of evidence (including Express Scripts’ own numbers) have shown that they overpay their own pharmacies and underpay competitors like us—it’s time that the U.S. government did their due diligence and held them, and other third-party contractors operating in the healthcare industry, accountable ✊

In light of cuts to SNAP benefits, let’s help feed our friends!

Just one week in and Hildie’s backseat is already filled to the brim with food, supplies, and paper bags that will be delivered to those in need this week via our neighborhood's little free pantries and Keystone Community Services' Community Food Center. THANK YOU so much to all of those who’ve contributed so far!

On October 25, 2025, the DEA and its federal partners will team up for the 29th bi-annual National Prescription Drug Take Back Day to remove unused, unwanted medications from homes and medicine cabinets to prevent drug misuse before it starts. Hildie is going to be working over the coming weeks on moving all of the advocacy content on our site over to the MNIndys website, where it truly belongs. Our Advocacy tab has served us well these past few years, but MNIndys is the perfect home for the info and resources you used to be able to find in this area of our site! In the coming days, our "Advocacy" tab will be updated to lead directly to mnindys.org.

We STRONGLY recommend that all patients and patrons who want to stay up-to-date on our advocacy work subscribe to MNIndys' monthly e-newsletter, the MNIndys Mailer (also written by Hildie!) at mnindys.org/subscribe

🔔 REMINDER 🔔

Medicare Open Enrollment for 2026 begins NEXT WEEK on October 15th! This is the period—which runs through December 7th—in which you can select and apply for a new insurance plan for next year.

Make sure to mark your calendar and start doing your research if you haven’t already done so. If you’re not sure where to start, our site’s Medicare page is a great place! We’ve recently added an “Other educational resources” subsection to the “Understanding your coverage” section of this page, which features two new Medicare “courses” John and Hildie have come across recently that we thought might be useful to those in need of education on what Medicare is and how it works (and, in many ways, doesn’t đŸ˜©).

We’ll also be adding information to this page once we know which plans we’ll be in-network with in 2026. Until then, please refrain from calling our pharmacy to ask us this question—we simply don’t know, which we know is frustrating. We feel the same way!

10/01/2025

In countries with universal healthcare, prescriptions are filled based on a national formulary, with an overarching goal both of reducing patient costs for medications that they need and keeping care accessible. While pharmacists in these health systems face their own set of hardships, we wanted to highlight some of the challenges that community pharmacists in America face during American Pharmacist’s Month.

😰 Pharmacists who own their own pharmacies—like our owner John and his family—in the United States face the daily and destructive abuse of Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs), who have the ability to reimburse their businesses next to nothing (or even charge them) for filling prescriptions. All over the country, they’re struggling to strike a balance that allows them to continue caring for patients AND keep the doors open, the lights on, because PAYING to provide care is a fundamentally unsustainable business model.

đŸ˜”đŸ’« Those who work in chain locations such as Walgreens and CVS may not face the stress of being both a healthcare provider and small business owner, but working as a chain pharmacist brings its own challenges, including insufficient staffing; an unrealistic—and, therefore, clinically unsafe—workload; poor management from leadership; increasingly unsafe workplaces due to growing theft and civil unrest; and, oftentimes, a workday without breaks to even use the restroom or have a snack. Check out these videos on our YouTube Channel from More Perfect Union for a peek inside their workplace: https://youtu.be/6RDMYgtSKis?si=iKdjqefjMg5XYIRi / https://youtu.be/woACpI9C9XE?si=cwfedGgyZbE1azOk

This month, we take special care to thank all of the pharmacists around the country who are continuing to show up, day in and day out, and care for their communities. You are appreciated, an inspiration, deserving of celebration, and worth fighting for. Make sure to thank your pharmacist(s) this October! ♄

📝 We need your signature! 📝

Similar in goal to our Single PBM and Directed Dispensing Payment Program bills passed last session, SF1059/HF255 establishes a Patient-Centered Care program to provide direct payments from the state to health care providers and clinics for services provided to Medical Assistance (MA) and MinnesotaCare enrollees, rather than renewing their current contracts with managed care plans. While very different in nature, all three bills are working to establish a healthcare system in Minnesota that checks private insurance companies’ greed and ensures that providers are being appropriately compensated for their care.

The proposed bill would also authorize payments for care coordination, grants for community outreach and discharge planning, and directs the commissioner of human services to ensure reasonable and timely provider reimbursement.

This legislation aims to reduce the impact of a large cut in federal Medicaid funding. 09/28/2025

1,700 small and large companies were surveyed, and the results showed that they are all expecting the sharpest increase in medical costs in about 15 years. This is due to rising drug costs, increasing hospital prices, and greater demand for care overall as our population gets (sadly) sicker.

This cost increase is problematic for both employers and employees. Some companies may choose to increase the insurance premiums deducted from employees’ paychecks, and others might increase out-of-pocket prices that employees pay for a visit to the doctor or a prescription. Either way, it’s bad for business
and everyone else in the U.S.

The issue of high prescription costs due to drug manufacturer prices and pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) is one that we know all too well, despite their insistent claims that they “save” the system money. Our Story

St. Paul Corner Drug first opened its doors back in 1922. Since then, we have grown to become St. Paul’s premier, independently-owned pharmacy. We still have our old-fashioned soda fountain and continue to provide the highest quality pharmacy services you can find. Our staff has a combined 170+ years of pharmacy service experience. We pride ourselves in developing relationships with our patients and customers so that they may gain greater knowledge and understanding of their health and wellness.

But our story is not just about “we,” us. It’s about YOU—our patient, our customer, our neighbor.

At St. Paul Corner Drug we accept most insurance plans, so you pay the same price as you would at one of the bigger chain pharmacies, but gain more value. You will leave our corner store with your prescriptions, filled efficiently, in hand, along with the proper knowledge of how to use your medication accurately and safely. You’ll learn how to choose nutritional supplements that compliment your healthcare needs and prescription therapies, and you can have those products, along with your prescriptions, delivered straight to your door. You’ll even be able to rent or purchase medical equipment from us, as well as special order your favorite over-the-counter items that you can’t find anywhere else.
