Healthpartners Center for Memory and Aging

Healthpartners Center for Memory and Aging Develops new ways to treat and prevent Alzheimer's disease and other memory disorders and implements these to improve the care of patients.

The Alzheimer's Research Center (ARC) conducts internationally recognized research that has led to the development of promising new treatments for Alzheimer's and other brain disorders. This includes our discovery of the intranasal insulin treatment which has been shown in multiple human clinical trials to improve memory in patients with Alzheimer's disease or mild cognitive impairment. Intranasal

insulin has even been shown to improve memory in normal, healthy adults. The Center for Dementia and Alzherimer's Care (CDAC) was established for the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of patients suffering from memory and cognitive disorders. Our goal is to improve dementia care by facilitating early detection and prevention of unnecessary hospitalizations through a holistic care philosophy including patients as well as families.

It’s not every day you see a researcher step into the shoes of their study participants. But that’s exactly what Amanda Herrmann, PhD, principal investigator at HealthPartners Institute, is doing.

Amanda is participating in a mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) course, gaining firsthand experience in the intervention she’s evaluating for people living with chronic stroke. “So far, I’ve completed seven out of the eight sessions, and I’ve really enjoyed it,” she shares. “I’ve been able to gain a lot of insight from the instructor, especially in regard to mindfulness practices.”

Chronic stroke refers to the stage of recovery six months or more after an initial stroke. It affects nearly 800,000 Americans each year, often altering the way people sense and understand signals from their own bodies. Amanda’s research seeks to discover whether MBSR can help. “This pilot study explores whether an MBSR program is feasible and acceptable in chronic stroke, and whether it may improve interoception, emotional well-being, and whole person health,” Amanda explains.

“We can’t guarantee benefits, but there have been a lot of improvements shown from other studies that have examined MBSR,” she says. “We hope that the information we gain from this study will help better support people living with chronic stroke.”

Folks vary widely in how they perceive and plan for future support needs, partially depending on how much support is available from family. This study recognized the "diverse attitudes toward long-term care (LTC) planning, we aimed to characterize and model the distinct phenotypes that emerge as older adults consider their future AD-related support needs".

While today may be April Fools’ Day, it’s worth remembering that ads for “miracle memory pills” don’t just show up once a year. They appear all the time — and they can be incredibly convincing.

We understand why they’re tempting — memory changes can be confusing, frustrating, and sometimes frightening.

But here’s the truth:
There’s no capsule, no overnight cure, and no supplement that can reverse memory loss.

What does make a difference?
Evidence‑based care, early evaluation, and support grounded in science.

Today’s a good day to laugh at the myths and trust the experts.
Happy April Fools’ Day from the HealthPartners Center for Memory & Aging.
