Navigating Fear and Uncertainty During Immigration Reform
The recent changes in immigration policy have created a wave of uncertainty, fear, and distress within immigrant communities. From new legislation to increased enforcement actions like ICE raids and deportations and even the potential removal of birthright citizenship, these shifts are deeply unsettling. If you’re feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or unsure of what comes next—you are not alone. These emotions are valid, and so many others are feeling the same way. In times like these, it’s important to prioritize your safety, well-being, and support systems. While there is so much that feels out of our control, there are still steps you can take to protect yourself, care for your loved ones, and safeguard your peace of mind.
Stay informed and prepared Know your rights
No matter your immigration status, you have rights. Understanding and asserting them can make a difference in critical situations:
● Contact local immigrant rights organizations and legal hotlines to provide up-to-date guidance on how to exercise your rights. See resource list below.)
Create an emergency plan
Having a plan in place can offer peace of mind:
● Identify a trusted person who can serve as an emergency contact.
● Make arrangements to care for children, elders, or dependents in case of unexpected separation.
● Gather and securely store important documents, such as identification, birth certificates, medical records, and any legal paperwork. Keep both physical copies and digital backups if possible.
