🌟 Fellow Friday Spotlight: Kimberly Dahl, Ph.D. CCC-SLP 🌟

We're excited to highlight Dr. Dahl, an assistant professor at Emerson College. She finished her PhD in Speech, Language, and Hearing Science at Boston University in 2025.

Dr. Dahl is a dedicated researcher seeking to understand the complex interplay between how we speak and how we are heard. Her work focuses on speech motor control in dynamic interactions and the role of the listener in communication.

As a speech-language pathologist, her work draws on her clinical experience in voice and motor speech disorders, as well as in head & neck cancer, to inform her teaching and research at Emerson.

Her long-term goal is to continue building the SMALL Lab at Emerson (Speech Motor Action, Learning, & Listening), expanding her research program, and providing space for students to engage in speech research.

πŸ“’ New Publication Alert! πŸ“’

Excited to share research from our members' latest research on a case report for an individual with evolving aphasia secondary to brain tumor resection and postoperative stroke in acute and inpatient rehabilitation settings.

The article describes the assessment and intensive language therapy for a 35-year-old patient who developed aphasia after ganglioma resection and left PCA infarct. Over 16 sessions of evidence-based treatment incorporating neuroplasticity principles, the patient progressed from moderate-to-severe transcortical sensory aphasia to mild-to-moderate anomic aphasia.

This case adds to the limited literature on tumor-related language disorders and demonstrates the potential for significant recovery with intensive, targeted language therapy in acute and inpatient rehabilitation settings.

πŸ“’ New Publication Alert! πŸ“’

Excited to share research from our members' latest research on telepractice for aphasia treatment! They evaluated the feasibility of delivering Multimodal Communication Treatment with discourse (teleMCT+D) remotely to help people with aphasia resolve communication breakdowns.

Key findings:
βœ… High feasibility for recruitment & data collection
βœ… Participants found the treatment acceptable & viewed telepractice positively, with minimal negative reactions and events.
βœ… Mixed effects on accuracy and nonspoken modality use.
βœ… No improvement in spoken modality productions.
βœ… Participants reported using nonspoken modalities (like gesturing) more in daily conversations

Authors discuss the advantages and disadvantages of teleMCT+D and call for future studies to test the suggested modifications in a large sample, including individuals across types and severity. This work shows promise for improving access to aphasia treatment for underserved populations through telepractice.

🌟 Fellow Friday Spotlight: Allison Shane 🌟

We're thrilled to highlight Allison Shane, a second-year Master's student in Speech Language Pathology at the University of Connecticut, whose passion for neurologic communication disorders has been years in the making.

✨ Her Journey
Allison's path began during her freshman year when she joined Dr. Jennifer Mozeiko's Aphasia Rehabilitation Lab. Through her work in the lab and volunteering in weekly aphasia language groups and book clubs, she began to understand that speech pathology centers on supporting meaningful communication that honors humanity and fosters connection by creating safe spaces for imperfect conversations, especially for individuals with aphasia and their caregivers.

πŸ”¬ Research and Clinical Interests
This perspective motivated her Honors Thesis, which uses LENA technology to record how environmental enrichment and caregiver training generalized to naturalistic home communication. Clinically, Allison has developed diverse skills across multiple settings: the UConn Speech and Hearing Clinic (pediatric & adult populations), a local skilled nursing facility, acute care rotations, middle and high school settings, and her upcoming rotation in an inpatient rehabilitation setting.

πŸŽ“ What's Next
Graduating this May, Allison is ready to begin her Clinical Fellowship in acute care or rehabilitation settings with adults with neurologic communication disorders. Her long-term vision? To bridge research and clinical practice while advocating for patients and caregivers in medical settings, ensuring their needs and goals are truly understood and respected.

Help us wish Allison congratulations and good luck in her future endeavors!
