๐Ÿšจ Exciting news from the Apraxia of Speech (AOS) Writing Group! Their latest publication examines how participant demographics are reported in AOS treatment research.

While nearly all studies share participantsโ€™ age and sex/gender, thereโ€™s a major gap: crucial info like race/ethnicity, language background, and socioeconomic status is rarely included. Only 24% of studies reported race/ethnicity, and of those, almost 90% of participants were identified as White. Socioeconomic status wasnโ€™t reported in any studies.

๐Ÿ”Ž Why does this matter? Without complete demographic data, itโ€™s hard to ensure that research is equitable and truly representative. Thatโ€™s why the authors are calling for more inclusive recruitment and standardized demographic reporting. To help, they have created a practical template for researchers and clinicians to use moving forward.

Letโ€™s work together to make AOS research, and all research in our fields, more inclusive and impactful for all!

๐ŸŒŸ Why Become Board Certified with ANCDS? ๐ŸŒŸ

Considering Board Certification with ANCDS? Dr. Purcell recently achieved her BC-ANCDS and shared how the mentoring program made a difference:

โ€œWorking on Board Certification with the Academy of Neurologic Communication Disorders was one of the most valuable, engaging, and challenging experiences of my career as a speech-language pathologist thus far. The process pushed me in ways that were both expected and unexpected, and I'm incredibly grateful for the support I received from my mentors in the field.

The mentoring program added value to the experience by further challenging my clinical problem-solving skills and supporting me in understanding the requirements of the certification. The mentoring supported me through discussions of complex cases and the challenges of transitioning from writing clinical reports to learning how to write case studies. This resulted in improved writing, increased clinical reasoning, and a sense of pride and camaraderie within the program and experience.

I encourage anyone seeking BC-ANCDS to pursue mentoring! It adds so much to this wonderful, challenging, and enriching experience!โ€

Dr. Purcellโ€™s journey is a testament to the value of mentorship, community, and perseverance. If youโ€™re considering Board Certification, our mentoring sessions can offer the guidance and camaraderie you need. Join us during our next session on Monday, March 9th!

๐Ÿ“ข New Publication Alert! ๐Ÿ“ข

New publication alert, published by our very own ANCDS members! This Special Communication examines the challenges and enablers of integrating goal attainment scaling (GAS) as a patient-centered outcome measure across neurorehabilitation programs.

Authors examined real-world experiences from:
๐Ÿฅ An inpatient rehabilitation facility
๐ŸŽ–๏ธ An intensive outpatient program for military service members, veterans & first responders with TBI
๐Ÿง  An outpatient clinic for adolescents & adults with mild TBI

Key insights:
โœ… Common barriers: staff training needs, time requirements, shifting program philosophies
โœ… Success factors: integrating GAS into workflows, leveraging technology for team communication, regular audits & feedback

Using Normalization Process Theory as their framework, they provide practical guidance for implementing patient-centered measurement tools that capture what truly matters to patients and align treatment goals with individual needs. This work offers a roadmap for clinicians looking to enhance person-centered care in neurorehabilitation settings.

๐Ÿ“ข New Publication Alert! ๐Ÿ“ข

Excited to highlight our members' new publication. This study investigated the challenges speech-language pathologists encounter when identifying depressive symptoms in individuals with aphasia.

Key findings from their focus groups:
๐Ÿ” Depression symptoms are difficult to distinguish from post-stroke behaviors
๐Ÿ“‹ Current depression assessments aren't designed for people with aphasia
๐Ÿค Lack of interdisciplinary collaboration limits accurate identification
๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ Family involvement can both help and hinder depression recognition

These findings highlight the urgent need for: โœ… Valid, aphasia-accessible depression assessment tools โœ… Interdisciplinary approaches involving SLPs, mental health clinicians, patients & families โœ… Better training for SLPs in recognizing depression in aphasia

This work aims to improve mental health support for people with aphasia during their recovery journey.

๐ŸŒŸ Fellow Friday Spotlight: Kimberly Dahl, Ph.D. CCC-SLP ๐ŸŒŸ

We're excited to highlight Dr. Dahl, an assistant professor at Emerson College. She finished her PhD in Speech, Language, and Hearing Science at Boston University in 2025.

Dr. Dahl is a dedicated researcher seeking to understand the complex interplay between how we speak and how we are heard. Her work focuses on speech motor control in dynamic interactions and the role of the listener in communication.

As a speech-language pathologist, her work draws on her clinical experience in voice and motor speech disorders, as well as in head & neck cancer, to inform her teaching and research at Emerson.

Her long-term goal is to continue building the SMALL Lab at Emerson (Speech Motor Action, Learning, & Listening), expanding her research program, and providing space for students to engage in speech research.
