Ski season is in full swing, but so is injury risk on the slopes. ⛷️

High speeds, crowded runs, flying equipment, icy conditions; it only takes one moment for an eye or facial injury to change the rest of the season.

Every winter, athletes experience serious trauma to the eyes, eyelids, orbit, and face from falls, collisions, and equipment impact. Many of these injuries are preventable.

Before your next run, protect what matters most:

• Wear a certified helmet every run, every time
• Use protective goggles that fit properly and meet safety standards
• Avoid skiing beyond your ability level
• Stay visible and be aware of downhill traffic
• Take breaks, as fatigue increases injury risk

When the eyes and face are injured, specialized care matters. Oculofacial plastic surgeons are uniquely trained to manage complex injuries around the eyes and restore both function and form.

This Ski Safety Awareness Month, ski smart. Protect your vision. Protect your face.

Noticing the signs of aging around your eyes?

Let's talk about how to treat it, with and without surgery.

Aging around the eyes present early, because the skin is thinner and more delicate. This shows up as:
• Crow’s feet
• Droopy or hooded eyelids
• Sagging brows
• Frown lines
• Under-eye lines
• Under-eye bags

Whether it’s fine lines from smiling or puffiness that won’t quit, the eye area needs a more specialized approach than the rest of the face.

Oculofacial plastic surgeons focus exclusively on the eyes and surrounding structures, offering both:

✨ Nonsurgical options like wrinkle relaxers, skin-tightening treatments, and lasers to smooth, refresh, and brighten
✨ Surgical solutions like eyelid surgery or brow lift when structure, not just skin, is part of the story

Because when it comes to the eyes, precision really matters.

Remember Columbo?

Peter Falk, the actor who famously portrayed Columbo, lived most of his life with an artificial eye.

At just 3 years old, Falk lost his eye to retinoblastoma, a rare and aggressive childhood cancer. His prosthetic eye became part of his signature look with the subtle squint audiences came to recognize on screen.

And it never slowed him down. He played sports, lived fully, and even joked about it years later:

"I remember once in high school the umpire called me out at third base when I was sure I was safe. I got so mad I took out my glass eye, handed it to him and said, 'Try this.' I got such a laugh you wouldn't believe."

The procedure to remove an eye, called enucleation or evisceration, is complex and life-changing. What many people don’t realize is that the restoration that follows is equally specialized.

Oculofacial plastic surgeons are uniquely trained to perform these delicate procedures, rebuild the eye socket, preserve facial symmetry, and coordinate prosthetic eye placement so patients can heal, function, and move forward with confidence.

From childhood cancer to trauma and advanced eye disease, this is highly specialized care focused on protecting vision, restoring appearance, and supporting patients for life.

Did you know about Columbo's prosthetic eye, or was this news to you?

Under-eye bags?

When under-eye bags linger no matter how much you sleep, hydrate, or treat them, there is usually more going on beneath the surface.

Common causes include:
• Natural aging and skin laxity
• Herniated fat pads under the eyes
• Genetics
• Chronic swelling or fluid retention
• Thinning skin that reveals underlying structures

This is where oculofacial plastic surgeons play a critical role.

Specialists in the delicate anatomy around the eyes, oculofacial plastic surgeons offer tailored solutions such as:
• Lower eyelid blepharoplasty
• Fat repositioning or removal
• Skin tightening techniques
• Nonsurgical treatments when appropriate

The goal is not to change how you look but to restore a smoother, more rested appearance while protecting eyelid function.

The eye and surrounding areas are delicate and exposed to many hazards. Ocular and orbital injuries are very common, often caused by:

- blunt force trauma
- flying debris
- shards that cause penetrating damage

Many injuries can be prevented by taking precautions.

1. Bathroom Safety: Prevent slip and fall injuries by putting in non-slip mats and installing rail grips if needed.
2. Sports Gear: Always wear your eye protection while playing sports or engaging in certain recreational activities. This time of year, hockey, skiing, and snowboarding are commonly where eye injuries occur.
3. Goggles: Wear eye protection while operating heavy machinery, such as electric hedge clippers, buzz saws, and electric sanders. Shards can fly toward your face, causing injury.
4. Eye Wash: If you work with harsh chemicals, in addition to eye protection, have eye wash available to rinse the eyes if exposed to the liquid.

Despite best intentions, eye injuries may still occur. In those cases, it's wise to consult with an oculofacial plastic surgeon if the ocular or orbital injury requires surgical intervention to repair.

Oculofacial plastic surgeons are board-certified ophthalmologists who are uniquely qualified to address specific injuries to the eye and surrounding area with precision and delicate techniques to address function and aesthetics.

Injury prevention is priority one. However, if injury occurs, our oculofacial plastic surgeons are here to help.

Let's talk about the impact your thyroid has on your eye health.

Up to 50% of people with thyroid disease can develop thyroid eye disease (TED), a condition that affects the eyes, eyelids, and orbit and can impact vision, comfort, and appearance.

TED may cause:
• Bulging or prominent eyes
• Eyelid retraction or swelling
• Double vision
• Eye pain, dryness, or pressure
• Vision changes

This is where oculofacial plastic surgeons play a critical role.

Oculofacial plastic surgeons are ophthalmologists with advanced surgical training focused exclusively on the eyes and the delicate structures around them. They evaluate and treat TED at every stage, coordinating care with endocrinologists and other providers to help protect vision and restore function.

If you are:
• Living with thyroid disease and seeing eye changes related to thyroid disease
• Managing patients with Graves’ disease or thyroid dysfunction
• A loved one or caretaker of someone living with thyroid disease

Early referral and specialized care matter.

To find an oculofacial plastic surgeon who treats thyroid eye disease, visit OculofacialSociety.org and use the Surgeon Search in the top navigation.

Education. Collaboration. Specialized care for TED.

That moment when the hockey puck comes straight at your face...

Eye and facial injuries can happen in an instant, and they can happen to anyone.

Whether you're on the ice, the slopes, or the baseball field, your eyes are at risk without proper protection. Every year, thousands of athletes experience eye injuries. Some are minor, while others are serious enough to need surgery.

⚠️ It’s important to take steps to protect your vision:

👓 Wear protective eyewear like sports goggles or face shields designed to absorb impact.
📋 Follow safety guidelines by using the right gear and practicing good technique.
👀 Stay aware of your surroundings to help avoid collisions and accidents.

And hey, if you're just filming from the sidelines, maybe don’t stand in the line of fire.

If an eye or facial injury happens, it’s important to seek care from an oculofacial plastic surgeon. These specialists are uniquely trained to manage injuries around the eyes and provide expert care for optimal healing.

🏅 Coaches and trainers should encourage athletes to wear eye protection and refer serious injuries to a member of the Oculofacial Society for specialized treatment.

Play smart, stay safe, and keep your eyes in the game.

👉 Did you know that the bathroom is the most dangerous room in the house for slip and fall accidents?

Children and seniors are especially vulnerable, but a misstep on a wet floor can happen to anyone, resulting in serious injury. Many of these injuries affect the eyes, specifically orbital fractures and eyelid trauma.

Here's how you can prevent bathroom injuries:
• Use non-slip mats, in and out of the tub
• Install grab bars when needed
• Supervise children during bath time

If an eye injury occurs, oculofacial plastic surgeons are uniquely trained and qualified to help. While some injuries heal on their own, others are more serious and need specialized care to protect vision and support proper healing.

Watching our kids light up with excitement as they open gifts during the holidays is a joyful experience.

Witnessing their excitement as they quickly want to enjoy their new toys is a parenting win.

There are, however, an increase in injuries during the holidays related to new toys. That's why, during this Safe Toys and Gifts Awareness Month, we're spreading the word about toy safety during the holiday season.

Many toys have the potential to cause eye injury. Most often these are:
- Projectiles: BB guns, soft-dart guns
- Pointy items: plastic swords, light sabers
- Flying toys: drones, remote control airplanes and helicopters

We want every child to stay out of the emergency room this holiday season, so help us spread the word about toy safety this month. 😁

Safety Tips from Oculofacial Plastic Surgeons:

1. Make sure all gifts are age appropriate. Sometimes well-meaning and generous friends and relatives purchase toys that are meant for much older children. Be sure to check the age limits and use your own judgment about toys that have the potential to harm.

2. Discuss safety with your children. Sometimes, all it takes is a discussion and demonstration about how to safely play with new toys to ensure no one gets hurt.

3. Adult supervision can help. When talking with them may not be enough (they are excited, after all), standing by to ensure the rules are followed can prevent injury. Maybe you join in on the fun, too!

4. Check online reviews before purchasing and playtime. Online reviews are a wealth of information. If a lot of children have already been harmed by a new toy, you'll find out very quickly from upset parents on the internet. We recommend a quick online search.

👉 Have you ever witnessed an eye injury in a child during playtime? Tell us about it in the comments. 💬 ⤵

reminds us to protect our eyesight, a gift we often don't much appreciate until we start to lose it.

👉 Here are some lesser known causes for vision loss:

1. 😎 Skin cancer on the eyelids: An aggressive form of skin cancer on the eyelids can spread and threaten eyesight. Wearing UV protective sunglasses can help prevent skin cancer and protect your vision.

2. 👁 Ocular injury: An eye injury can lead to partial or complete vision loss. Prevent ocular injuries by following safety precautions while operating heavy machinery and playing sports. Other risks for ocular injury include toys with projectiles, slip and falls (especially in the bathroom), and falling from high places, such as on a ladder.

3. 💉 Aesthetic injections: Certain injectable procedures near the eye, when placed incorrectly, can risk vision loss. Nonsurgical nose jobs using dermal filler injection into the nose can block blood vessels to the eye, causing blindness. To protect your health and vision, we encourage you to be very selective with the provider you choose to inject your face.

👉 Oculofacial plastic surgeons can help!

1. If you are diagnosed with skin cancer on the eyelids, or you notice a suspicious spot on that delicate area, see your dermatologist and oculofacial plastic surgeon for diagnosis, skin cancer removal, and reconstruction.

2. If you experience an ocular injury, requesting a referral to an oculofacial plastic surgeon ensures expert care. It's a very delicate area of the face, so working with a board-certified ophthalmologist with additional training and expertise in oculofacial plastic surgery ensures good outcomes.

3. Are you looking to receive aesthetic injections for facial rejuvenation? Oculofacial plastic surgeons have unique expertise as both plastic surgeons and ophthalmologists to inject safely with beautiful results. This is particularly important when dealing with the eye area or performing injections that have higher complication potential, like filler in the nose.

Of course, remember to see your eye doctor on schedule. Early detection of potential issues with your vision can help reverse damage and improve eyesight. So take care of your eyes and, when needed, request a referral to an oculofacial plastic surgeon.
