The life of a doula! Wouldn’t trade it for anything.

: The first urine-based pregnancy test was recorded in Ancient Egypt in 1350 B.C. A woman would urinate on barley and wheat seeds for a few days, and if they grew it meant she was pregnant. If barley grew, she was pregnant with a boy, and if wheat grew she was pregnant with a girl.
And get this, the Office of NIH History reports that in 1963 this was tested...and found to be true 70% of the time! 🤣

Mama Monday: At one month most mothers will be producing nearly as much milk as their baby will ever need. Because the rate of growth slows as babies get older they continue to need about the same amount of breastmilk per day from one month to six months of age. The nursing pattern will change during that time even though the volume of intake over the day remains much the same. (photo credit: Meredith Westin Photography: Birth Stories and Films)

Birth is an amazingly powerful and life changing event in a persons life. And in this case for many many woman! Midwifes are amazing!

Wyoming is called the "Equality State", because it was the first state to allow women to vote. You see, there was this midwife, Esther Morris, who was also a bar tender and a judge - definitely positions of great influence! She was the midwife for the wife of a state legislator (William Bright), and after a difficult but successful birth, Mr. Bright gratefully promised Esther Morris anything she wanted. She wanted to vote. She wanted ALL women to vote. He sponsored the bill, and it became law. it wasn’t perfect. It only allowed white women to vote. But it was a start. So we can thank a MIDWIFE for initiating women's voting rights in the USA. Right on, Esther! Today is Election Day. Please. Don't let Esther down. Pack up your babies and go vote!

This is a great suggestion. If you have any IV fluids in labor that fluid will also go to baby. Baby’s weight at birth can be inflated due to these extra fluids. Ask for a 24 hr weight, as baby will have urinated these fluid out and will give you a better number for babies weight.

Awaiting a new baby? Here’s a tip!

Make sure you ask your health-care team for a baby weigh at the 24-hour mark if you had an IV in labour for more than a few hours. Your baby will have an inflated weight at birth due to your IV fluids, and after 24-hrs has urinated a majority of these out.

Compare their weights to their 24-hr weight for a more accurate idea of how well they’re doing!! A normal percent weight loss (most common reason for supplementation) may look like too much, when the wrong numbers are used.

Happy world breastfeeding week!

Happy world breastfeeding week!

For a lot of new parents there can be anxiety about breastfeeding and producing enough milk for what your newborn needs.

But do you want to hear some good news?!

The first few days your body produces a liquid gold called colostrum. Colostrum is quite the miraculous substance that provides all the essential nutrients (and more!) to your newborn.

The first day, your baby's stomach is the size of a marble. And while I don't have a marble on hand, I do have a chocolate covered coffee bean (my fav) to give you a size visual! So there's no pressure to fill bottles and bottles full... you just need a chocolate covered coffee bean worth ;-)

While we are on the topic of production, your body produces more milk when it receives the command to make some. The best way to "signal the kitchen for more food" is to have continuous skin to skin contact and to NURSE YOUR NEWBORN ON DEMAND. There is a lot of transition that happens after delivery so take the pressure off and use this sacred time to heal, focus on your nursing relationship and fall more in love with your baby.
