“Tigger,” said Pooh one quiet afternoon as they walked through the golden leaves of the Hundred Acre Wood, “have you ever thought about how different we are?”

Tigger bounced beside him, his stripes glowing in the sunlight. “Different? Of course we are, Pooh Bear! You think slowly and I bounce quickly. You like quiet and I like loud. You eat honey and I eat… well, actually, I haven’t figured out what Tiggers eat best, but that’s beside the point.”

Pooh chuckled softly. “Yes, that’s what I mean. We do things differently. But somehow, being with you feels… just right.”

Tigger stopped bouncing for a moment, which is something he almost never does, and looked at Pooh thoughtfully. “You know, Pooh,” he said, “I think that’s what friendship is. Not being the same, but fitting together anyway—like stripes and fluff, like bouncing and thinking, like talking and listening.”

Pooh smiled the kind of smile that only comes from feeling very loved. “It’s nice to have a friend who pulls you up when you’re slow, and stays beside you when you’re still.”

“And it’s nice,” Tigger said with a grin, “to have a friend who always has snacks.”

They both laughed, and the wind rustled softly through the trees, as if the forest itself was smiling too.

“Different is good,” said Pooh at last. “Different with a friend is even better.”
