MOST SACRED HEART OF JESUS, out of love You let Yourself be pierced pouring forth Blood and Water, we pray that You free us, purify us and grant us the grace that our hearts may be transformed from hearts of stone to hearts of flesh. May we by contemplating the love and sacrifice of Your Heart be moved to go from selfishness to Love; from pride to Humility; from rebellion to Meekness; from darkness to Light.

IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY, by your perfect communion of love with the Heart of your Son you received spiritually the same sword that pierced His Heart, we pray that you may teach us to reach that same communion of love. May our hearts imitating yours Mother, be docile to the action of the Holy Spirit, so that we may thus be instruments of Peace, Light, Life and Love.

Just recently gave a presentation where my first introductory slides provide perspective and a proposed solution to the current news about the inefficacy of multi-vitamin and dietary supplements on reducing chronic diseases.

Slide 1: The link between food and health is well documented ... and undisputed.

Slide 2: There are dietary guidelines from the American Cancer Institute and American Heart Association for lowering cancer and heart disease ... but exactly how foods reduce chronic diseases are unknown.

Slide 3: Some recent news and messages toward the consumers are misleading and confusing...
- Study finds no reduction in breast cancer risk with consumption of fruits and vegetables.

How Lunasin was discovered.

Louis Pasteur once said that “discovery is just an accident meeting a prepared mind” and that is exactly how the anti-cancer effect of lunasin was serendipitously discovered.

A. The original intent in the DeLumen lab at UC Berkeley was to clone the gene for a methionine-rich protein (MRP) in soybean. The cloned 2s albumin gene encoded the MRP as the large subunit component and lunasin as a small subunit peptide component.

B. Unlike other seed storage proteins, lunasin was expressed at the cell expansion phase of seed development, characterized by an aberrant cell division process called DNA endoreduplication, wherein storage parynchema cells undergo DNA replication without cell division. Lunasin was found co-localized to the nuclei of endoreduplicated storage cells.

C. In the process of subcloning the lunasin gene for expression in bacteria, the wrong bacterial cell was used allowing the unregulated expression of lunasin. Basal expression of lunasin caused the elongation of bacterial cells without septation (segmentation characteristic of dividing bacteria).

D. In October 2, 1996, I sent an e-mail message to my colleague in the Philippines outlining my hypothesis that the disruptive effect of lunasin on bacterial cell division was a manifestation of its conserved role in DNA endoreduplication of seed storage cells. I proposed the use of mammalian cancer cells to prove the hypothesis that lunasin can disrupt cell division in multi-cellular organisms.

E. In April, 1997, the expression of the lunasin gene in breast cancer cells was shown to cause disruption of cell division by preventing the proper attachment of spindle fibers to the chromosomes. The first ever paper on lunasin describing the discovery of its anti-cancer effect was published in Nature Biotechnology in 1999.
