After 50-plus years of combined funeral service to St. Louis, Lincoln and Warren Counties, Jim and Bob Lonning were well aware that many funeral homes were not meeting the needs of financially strapped families or families desiring full funeral alternatives, such as cremation, graveside and memorial services or the gift of donation to medical science. In 1995, the Lonnings opened Alternative Funeral & Cremation Services, offering those families a solution. Eliminating costly buildings, cars and personnel enables the Lonnings to offer a variety of dignified services to satisfy a family’s economic needs and personal preferences. A fully licensed funeral home, Alternative Funeral & Cremation Services is tastefully appointed with a chapel and coffee lounge and services just one family at a time, instead of having several rooms empty. Arrangements may be made at the time of need or by pre-arrangement, and pricing is listed on the Web site. Through a funeral trust controlled and monitored by the state of Missouri and endorsed by the Missouri Funeral Directors Association, arrangements paid in advance are guaranteed, and the price will never increase. For families opting for visitation and funeral services in a church – perhaps the same church in which the deceased was baptized, worshiped and was married – Alternative Funeral & Cremation Services can make arrangements at a cost often far less than what normally is charged for services at a funeral home. Cremation prices start at $750. The Lonnings’ philosophy is simple: A family pays only for services needed.
