Understanding spoken language can be really tough for many people with aphasia—so what can we do to help?? Add visuals to your conversations! Using pictures, gestures, or real-life items makes your message more clear, concrete, and easier to understand. Plus, it gives the brain extra support to process language.

Last week, we discussed Wernicke's fluent aphasia. This week, let's highlight another type of fluent aphasia...Anomic Aphasia. People with Anomic Aphasia typically:

1. Have difficulty finding the names of people, places, objects
2. Speak in sentences with long pauses
3. Speak in vague language (ex. "stuff" and "things")

Reminder: all aphasia types contain anomia as a characteristic, however, in Anomic Aphasia, anomia is the person’s primary deficit.
