Over the past few weeks, we’ve shared information about non-fluent types of aphasia. This week, we’re highlighting a fluent type: Wernicke’s Aphasia. People with Wernicke’s Aphasia typically:

• Speak in full sentences that include incorrect or made-up words
• Have difficulty repeating words or phrases
• Have trouble understanding spoken language
• Have near-normal movement in their right arm and leg (sometimes with mild weakness)

For more information about Wernicke's Aphasia, please visit our website at the link in our bio!

Meet Kay, a college student who faced a traumatic brain injury, leaving her with Broca’s Aphasia. With hard work at The Aphasia Center, she learned strategies to repair communication breakdowns, started speaking in 4+ word sentences independently, and even self-corrected grammatical errors. Her progress is inspiring!

Aphasia can result from both a stroke and a traumatic brain injury (TBI), but it can present differently. Strokes usually affect a specific area of the brain, leading to more focused language difficulties, while TBIs often impact multiple areas, causing broader cognitive challenges. Because of this, aphasia from either cause can appear as any type of aphasia, depending on the areas affected.

Either way, we're here to help. Click the link to fill out an application: https://theaphasiacenter.com/application/

Last week, we provided an overview of Broca's Aphasia. Let's highlight another non-fluent type of aphasia, Global Aphasia. People with Global Aphasia typically:

1. Only say a few words
2. Speak in stereotypical utterance (the same word/sounds over and over)
3. Have severe deficits across reading, writing, speaking, and understanding, equally.
4. Receive this diagnosis while in the hospital right after their stroke, but may move to a different aphasia type quickly

**REMINDER: two people with the same diagnosis may present differently
