Fish and seafood are generally considered a healthy source of protein; however, it is important to be mindful of high mercury levels. Mercury can be toxic to the brain and central nervous system, cardiovascular system, kidney, lungs, and immune system. Some of the possible clinical manifestations of mercury toxicity include anxiety, sleep problems, fatigue, memory problems, decreased processing speed, tremors, changes in vision, changes in hearing, elevated cholesterol, problems with blood pressure regulation, cardiovascular disease, and sensory disturbances.

When choosing seafood aim for fish low in mercury levels and rich in Omega 3 Fatty acids to be the most beneficial to your health. I often encourage my patients to use this chart by Lifestyle Matrix Resource Center as a reference. I also suggest a quality fish oil supplement daily such as ProOmega by Nordic Naturals. 🐠🐠🐠

I love a variety of different protein powders and pumpkin protein powder is my current go-to. 🎃Pumpkins are highly nutritious, heart-healthy, and incredibly nutrient-dense. They are rich in antioxidants, vitamin A, potassium, vitamin C, vitamin E, amino acids, magnesium, and high in fiber.

My kids love Danielle Walker's "Against the Grain" spiced pumpkin muffins and I love roasting pumpkin to add to salads and snacking on roasted pumpkin seeds which are loaded with phytonutrients and antioxidants. Pumpkins are a superfood 🎃 They support immune health, regulate blood pressure, increase fiber intake, promote healthy skin and eyes, improve prostate health and protect against cardiometabolic conditions.

Michael Pollan's Food Rules is a great read. If you are looking to eat cleaner, eat more whole foods, and eliminate junk check out this worthwhile book. 📖💗🍵🥬

These are my little kid favorites💗

👉BioFizz- Orange flavored powder with a blend of immune-supportive nutrients, including Quercetin, zinc, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Resveratrol, potassium; all ingredients shown to be helpful with COVID-19. I combine this with Gerolsteiner mineral soda water or the Little DaVinci Fizzy Mag and soda water which both contain bicarbonate, magnesium, and potassium; all shown to depleted in COVID-19.

👉Imu-Max comes in a syrup which my kids love. I give it to them when we travel or at the earliest sign of a sniffle. It contains echinacea, one of the best-known botanicals used to boost the immune system, and propolis, a product of bee resin, which helps maintain normal inflammatory balance. It also contains Rosehips which are packed full of vitamin C, E and B, and other antioxidants and minerals important for the immune system.

👉Natranix includes a blend of all-natural botanical ingredients that support the immune system such as Anise, Thyme, European Elderberry and is a great tasting respiratory support formula that I also give my kids if they develop a tickle in their throat and start coughing.

👉Baby DHA by Nordic Naturals- I have been giving my kiddos this since they were born. They love it to this day although may be less palatable to kids that are not used to it; in that case I recommend the Omega 3 Perles by Nordic Naturals. It contains Omega 3 fatty acids that are critical for brain development but also gut and immune health. It also contains Vitamin A and Vitamin D which also is critical for immune health.

👉Liposomal Vitamin C by Quicksilver- ones demand for Vitamin C goes up with viruses and we have used this form of Vitamin C during sickness 1 tsp every 4-6 hours as tolerated (to bowel tolerance) and found it hugely helpful.

👉Liquid Vitamin D3 Apex Energetics-love this Vitamin D3 since the only other ingredient is MCT oil and it contains 2000IU/drop. I give my kids a drop a day.

👉Liquid Iodine Biotics Research: This is incredibly important for the immune system and natural production of hydrogen peroxide in our body which combats viruses. Recommend 1 drop daily for kids.

With Covid-19 and the Delta variant lingering everywhere it is important to continue to build your immunity. Many of us are adjusting to back to school routines and the hustle and bustle that the academic year brings. I continue to encourage families to implement healthy habits such as quality sleep, nutritious meals, daily exercise, and stress management. It is important to keep our kiddos as healthy as possible since many are back in the classroom. I recommend checking out Dr. Elisa Song as she has several informative online resources to help parents navigate through these challenging times.

Many of my patients have heard me talk about nitric oxide and the vital role it plays in preventing disease and maintaining good circulation throughout the body. Now more than ever people have low levels of nitric oxide due to sedentary lifestyles, poor diets, and frequent use of either prescribed or over the counter NSAIDS (such as Ibuprofen, Advil, Naproxen), acid blockers (such as Omeprazole, Nexium, Prevacid), and Mouthwash. These are often thought of as harmless since they are readily available, however long term use of these agents can be problematic by lowering nitric oxide levels in the body through the following mechanisms:

NSAIDS and acid blockers raise ADMA, a compound which inhibits nitric oxide
Mouthwash not only kills bad bacteria, but also the good bacteria in the crypts of your tongue which make nitric oxide.

NITRIC OXIDE IS CRITICAL FOR THE FOLLOWING:

👉Good circulation
👉Energy
👉Sexual health
👉Prevention of disease
👉Mental health
👉Skin health
👉Immune Response
👉Gastrointestinal Tract
👉And so much more…

In fact, without nitric acid, we could not survive.

Here are some simple lifestyle modifications to improve testosterone levels naturally.... I often recommend adrenal adaptogens to help men better manage their stress such as Maca root, Ashwagandha, and/or Phosphatidylserine since unmanaged stress decreases testosterone. Also, if I suspect someone has sleep apnea, I will have them tested since untreated sleep apnea can be a cause of low testosterone. Lastly, I sometimes order environmental toxin testing to pinpoint exposures that could be blocking testosterone production (also known as endocrine disruptors).

Here are some interesting findings about testosterone levels in men:

👉Several studies have established low testosterone to be associated with an increased risk for cardiovascular disease.

👉Low testosterone has been associated with elevated cardiovascular disease biomarkers, metabolic syndrome, carotid intima medial thickness, and even an increase in all cause mortality.

👉Epidemiology studies show that low levels of testosterone are associated with more atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease, and cardiovascular events.

👉Testosterone levels are significantly lower among men with one or more comorbid conditions (obesity, cancer, congestive heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes).

👉50% of men with diabetes are testosterone deficient.

We check free and total testosterone levels on all of our male patients annually since it is important in assessing our patients risk for disease, especially cardiovascular disease. I encourage every male, to have their levels checked by their doctor.
