Why was my Social Security Disability Claim Denied?

While you may be unable to work due to your medical conditions, if you do not meet Social Security’s medical and non-medical (technical) requirements, your claim will be denied.

SSDI Requirements:
To qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), you need enough work credits. Generally, this means you must have worked 5 out of the last 10 years before your alleged onset date (AOD) of disability. For example, if you worked from 1990 to 2005 but became disabled in 2013, you wouldn't qualify because you didn't work 5 of the 10 years before your disability.

SSI Requirements:
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a need-based program with strict income and resource limits. As of 2024, if you're single, your total assets (excluding one primary car and home) must be less than $2,000. For married couples, the limit is $3,000. All forms of income, including earned and unearned income like child support, alimony, pensions, etc., are considered. The federal benefit rate (FBR) for 2024 is $914/month for individuals and $1,371 for couples. Earnings over $1,550/month ($2,590 if blind) disqualify you from receiving benefits.

Technical Denials:
A technical denial means you don’t meet the non-medical requirements, regardless of your medical condition. If your work credits, income, or assets don’t align with Social Security's rules, your claim will be denied. If this happens and the information is correct, there’s no point in appealing unless there was an error in your evaluation.

Medical Denials:
Even if you meet the non-medical criteria, you must still prove you’re medically disabled. Social Security defines disability as the inability to engage in substantial gainful activity (SGA) due to a medically determinable physical or mental impairment expected to last at least 12 months or result in death.

What happens when I reach Social Security retirement age?

Upon reaching full retirement age, the benefits you receive through Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) will seamlessly transition to retirement benefits, maintaining the same amount.

If you are currently receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), your benefit amount will seamlessly transition to retirement benefits upon reaching full retirement age, which is determined by your birth year and typically falls between 65 and 67 years. This transition will occur automatically without the need for additional application or notification to the Social Security Administration. Importantly, the monthly benefit amount will remain consistent throughout this conversion process.

For individuals receiving Social Security Early Retirement (SSER) benefits and who are also disabled, specific regulations govern their situation, which may differ from the standard SSDI procedure.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) constitutes a needs-based program tailored for individuals with limited financial assets and resources. Eligibility for SSI benefits extends to disabled individuals under the age of 65, while those aged 65 or older may qualify provided they meet the program's technical criteria, unrelated to medical considerations.
