It’s World Doula Week!

A doula is someone who walks with you during life transformations: birth, postpartum, injury, loss.

We listen, support, hold space and validate. Doulas come in all forms!

We are here to witness your big moments and to see you through them. We will always cheer you on and remind you how much of a badass you are.

Shout out to my personal doulas:

who came and went for 3 days of my first labor (yet there are no pics of us together) and who continues to be an inspiration to me as a doula, a mom and a human.
midwifery who is obviously a midwife but doulaed the crap outta me for both pregnancies (even tho during the second she wasn’t even technically my midwife until the third trimester!) and births.
reynosong who is holding my hand in this pic and continues to doula me (and hang out with me) to this day.

To my partner who makes this work 1000x more fun, sustainable and hilarious! And finally for all my birthworker soul siblings including with and

Do yourself a favor and HIRE A DOULA! 👏🏼

I’ve been quiet here. The end of pregnancy is a time where I like to turn inward and focus on my family, my baby, and myself. I like to be in quiet nature and have been craving the sea and sand and sunshine. The beach is my happy place. The place I go for grounding. And that is exactly where this baby has been calling me.

I’ve also been busy, and my body reminded me this week with intense hip pain and a nasty cold that I need to say “no” to more. This week homeschool has looked a lot more like playing with kinetic sand, listening to podcasts, and building forts. And that’s ok.

Soon I’m going to share a few posts soon about what I’m doing to prepare for birth this time around. But in the mean time I’ll be here, practicing my boundaries and tuning in to what my body and baby needs from me these days.

Gentle reminder to get your bump out into nature this week.

What exactly does a postpartum doula do?

This is what my session looked liked today:

9am: arrived, washed hands, talked with family about how the past few days have gone. They told me about evening witching hour woes, what is working and what isn’t. They discussed fears they have, a provider they aren’t loving, and some providers they will be trying soon. I listened. Empathized. Made recommendations when appropriate. Held space.

9:30 dad got ready for work, I helped mom fold laundry on the floor with baby next to us and big sister chatting and playing nearby. I held baby while mom and big sis finished a game they had started earlier.

10:15: mom went to take a shower while I held baby and played with big sis. Baby got tired and I wore him and started prepping some soup for them to have this week (pictured above).

11am: mom got to enjoy a long shower with time to blow dry hair all alone and now joins us to get more one on one time with big sis. Baby is sleeping soundly on me while I’m prepping food.

11:20: baby wakes and is clearly looking to nurse. I bring baby to mom. Finish up food prep, put clean dishes away, wash dishes I used for food prep, wipe down counters and sweep kitchen floors.

11:50: dad back from work, food is done, kitchen is clean and we discuss the plan they have for moving forward with new providers and treatments, and confirm my next visit.

These 3 hours may not seem like much but this is what new parents need. Nourishing food, time to shower or nap, someone to hold space for each family member, and most importantly someone who will remind them they’re doing great.

My word for 2022 is home.

This will be our second year as home owners and we are finally feeling more settled and ready to take on the house projects we’ve been thinking & dreaming of (oh hey nesting).

We’ve made a commitment to not fly for the next calendar year, to save on money and help us stay focused.

We’re having our 3rd baby and I know this will be a big transition for all of us, especially our 2 older kids. I want them to be able to find their grounding with a steady rhythm at home.

I want to focus on learning some new skills: gardening, sourdough, and sewing. All things done best when time is spent at home.

And most importantly, I want to focus on the people in my home: my partner, my kids, this new baby we get to meet.

Do you have a word for 2022?

Pregnancy can be exhausting and difficult in ways we never imagined. And it can be full of joy and excitement and adventure.

One thing I took for granted during my first pregnancy was that I got to have my baby with me everywhere I went. I didn’t realize how special and sacred that was until I walked into the bathroom my first week back to work without him. I started to cry with a flood of memories crashing over me of walking into that bathroom pregnant, almost every day for 40 weeks. Walking in without him was devastating.

In my second pregnancy, I learned another hard lesson. That when you have a child outside the womb to tend to, it’s easy to forget the one inside your womb, who still needs tending to, as well. After his birth I realized there was so much about pregnancy that I complained about, but forgot to revel in.

While my work situation has changed significantly, I still carry these lessons with me into this 3rd pregnancy. Trying to remember to invite this baby into every moment, tend to this baby the way I will after the birth, and revel in the miracle that is growing life inside your womb.

Baby and I are getting our D this morning ☀️ 🤰🏼

The best form of vitamin d is the sun. It’s not fortified cereal, dairy or supplements, which are all synthetic hormones. It’s free and it’s right outside.

I’m starting to make a habit of doing as much of my daily life outside as possible. So today that looks like folding laundry while the kids run wild around me with balls and frisbees and scooters.

Some days it looks like doing homeschool outside or having our mid morning snack outside. Yesterday I did my yoga and pelvic floor exercises outside and that felt amazing.

What can you start doing outside that you typically do indoors? I’d love more ideas!

Let’s talk about the ideal pumping environment. You may see an increase in milk pumped when you pump in a setting that is comfortable and allows for oxytocin to flow - similar to the environment that is best for s*x or birth. Quiet, comfortable, and cozy. Someplace you can be vulnerable.

Ultimately though, the most ideal environment is the one that works for you. Is pumping in the backseat of a strangers car while rescuing a pit bull the most ideal pumping environment? No, it’s most definitely not. But did milk come out and nourish my baby? Yes.

So take these tips with a grain of salt and do your best. Sometimes our best is just a deep breath and relaxed shoulders before answering all the emails we need to catch up on. And sometimes it’s twinkle lights, classical music and lavender oil in the diffuser.

✨✨✨✨

Anyone else feel like they’re completing failing homeschooling and then bam! your kids surprise you with something like asking for “Spring” by Vivaldi in the car or to read The Last Battle by C.S. Lewis.

Homeschooling parents, what have your kids asked for that made you say 😅 “I must be doing ok” ?
