Wishing all Mom’s a wonderful Mother’s Day. So nice for HCA to recognize the special bond between our Dr. Desai’s and the special work that they do caring for our patient’s.

This Mother’s Day, we want to highlight a very special mother and daughter duo, Dr. Pratibha Desai and Dr. Poorvi Desai. They work together caring for cancer patients at HCA Florida Brandon Hospital.

The daughter, Poorvi grew up shadowing her mom, seeing how patients and her family members alike trust her mom due to her medical knowledge and care. She knew from an early age that her mom’s work was important, and she was respected for her expertise.

Her mom, Pratibha was the first doctor in her family. Her mom, Manjula Rathod was a real trailblazer, working in India rising to a government administrator of a national feeding initiative. Her belief that “you can be anything you want to be” has impacted a third generation.

The Desai family believes in giving back to their community in India. Both mom and daughter have returned to rural India to help people in dire need of medical assistance. These experiences helped inspire Poorvi to become a physician as a child and are still powerful memories that mom and daughter share.

Today, mother and daughter physicians care for cancer patients, specializing in hematology oncology at Brandon Hospital.

Moms in our community serve so many roles every day. Their love, support and strength inspire us.

Have a wonderful Mother’s Day!

There has been much confusion over the past decade when the USPSTF changed breast screening guidelines and recommended screening mammography at age 50. They have reversed that decision as studies show an increase in breast cancer diagnosis in younger women. They now recommend screening begin at age 40. Talk to your doctor and schedule your mammogram.

New draft recommendations propose biennial screening starting at age 40
