A sheyd (plural sheydim) is the classic Jewish demon. What is the difference between a sheyd and a Christian demon? Well, they aren’t fallen angels, for a start! So what are they, who are they, and do you need to worry about being possessed by one? Can you work with them? More important, should you?

Dr. Espinosa will use her background in religion to describe the sources of Jewish demonology. These sources are both mystical and folkloric, and feature Biblical characters such as King Solomon, with whom some viewers may already work.

Landvættir, or Landwights, are deeply embedded within Norse and early Anglo-Saxon cultures and landscapes. But there is no clear definition of Landwights—of what they actually are—except that they are spirits, and they in some way control the safety and fertility of the land. We do know a Landwight is a spirit, or a soul, who uses land for a body instead of a biological body. The Landwights are often tied to a spot in the landscape—a huge rock, a mountain, or a particularly beautiful place. It is said you will know where they are because “there, things are a little better. The grass is a little greener, all the colours of the flowers are a little bit brighter, and the bird song is more lilting and beautiful than just a few yards away.” —Jörmundur Ingi Hansen

In Ireland, the Sidhe and other otherworldly beings perform the same function, but with a slightly different perspective.

Let us take a journey through the landscape to encounter the Landvættir and the Sidhe—the guardians of our sacred land and other beings who inhabit the ancient and modern landscape.
