What if the place you live could actually help you live longer and healthier?

Research continues to show that older adults who remain socially connected, physically active, well nourished, and supported by accessible healthcare experience better health outcomes and greater longevity. At Friendship, independent living is designed around those very principles. It’s not simply about maintenance-free living—it’s about creating an environment where residents can truly thrive.

Friendship supports longer, healthier lives in many ways--one of them is through the power of social engagement.

Loneliness has been identified as one of the greatest health risks for older adults. In fact, studies from the National Institute on Aging suggest that chronic isolation can increase the risk of dementia, heart disease, and depression.

Independent living at Friendship is built around community. Residents enjoy:
-Clubs and interest groups
-Cultural events and holiday gatherings
-Volunteer opportunities
-Games and social gatherings
-Educational programs and lifelong learning

These daily interactions foster meaningful relationships and a strong sense of belonging. When residents wakeup each day with friends nearby and something to look forward to, their mental and emotional wellbeing improves dramatically.
At Friendship, independent living is more than a housing option—it’s a lifestyle built around connection and confidence for the future.

If you’re exploring options for active, independent living in Roanoke and Salem, Virginia, we invite you to learn more about how Friendship supports vibrant, healthy aging.

Our Health Center residents participated in our very own Olympic Games — complete with assisted luge and sharp shooting (Friendship-style, of course!).
Residents cheered each other on as they raced snow tubes down indoor lanes. Then it was time to test focus and precision during sharp shooting, where residents took careful aim and showed off impressive skills.

More than medals or scores, the real wins were the smiles, movement, and meaningful connections. Activities like these help promote mobility, spark joy, and build community — and they perfectly capture what life at Friendship is all about: staying active, having fun, and celebrating every victory, big or small.
Way to go, Olympians — we’re already training for the next games!

We’re proud to sponsor Kids Square Children’s Museum—and even prouder of what that partnership makes possible.

Each month, families who visit Kids Square take time to create handmade cards for our residents at Friendship Retirement Community. Those simple notes, colorful drawings, and heartfelt messages travel straight from little hands to older hearts—and the impact is powerful.

At Friendship, we believe intergenerational experiences are essential to building a stronger, more connected community. When children and seniors share kindness, creativity, and stories (even through something as small as a card), everyone benefits. Smiles are exchanged. Loneliness is eased. And meaningful connections are formed across generations.

Thank you to Kids Square and the amazing families who help remind our residents that they are loved, remembered, and part of something bigger. šŸ’›

Because community is better—at every age—when we grow it together.

Black History Month | Vision & Values Honoree
Today, we proudly recognize Rev. Adrian E. Dowell, a lifelong servant leader whose faith, vision, and compassion have strengthened our community for decades.

Since 1994, Rev. Dowell has led Shiloh Baptist Church with integrity and innovative thinking—guiding major growth, a facility expansion, and a vibrant congregation that reaches across Salem, Roanoke City, and Roanoke County. His leadership is rooted in trust, accountability, and a deep commitment to lifting others.

Beyond the pulpit, Rev. Dowell has poured his heart into social work, youth mentorship, and countless community boards—helping shape education, healthcare ethics, and opportunities for young people throughout the Roanoke Valley. Whether coaching youth sports or serving on civic and faith-based committees, he leads by example and inspires everyone around him to be their best.
