Proper diet and nutrition are critical to maintaining a healthy visual system and recent studies show they can play a key role in helping with the prevention and recovery of concussions. It is difficult to overstate the importance of healthy eye care. In addition to yearly check-ups, there are things you can do to keep your visual system working properly. It is the most important sensory system the body has.

Many people have heard that eating carrots will help you see better. There are many other foods that provide nutrients that will not only aid in maintaining quality vision but provide numerous additional health benefits.

If quality of life and good vision are important to you, eating foods with Vitamins A, C and E, along with Zinc, Lutein and Zeaxanthin, and Omega-3 fatty acids can give the body what it needs to keep you healthy. Some of the best sources of these nutrients come from fish, leafy greens, and vegetables, but there are many other foods and supplements that can provide them as well.

Better Safe Than Sidelined โ€“ Proper Eye Protection in Sports

It is important to consider wearing proper eyewear when participating and competing in sports. Studies show that individuals suffer approximately 40,000 sports related eye injuries each year. Remarkably, 90 percent of these injuries could be prevented by wearing appropriate protective eyewear. Most of these sports related eye injuries occur in children.

Glasses made for everyday use are not built to the same protective standards as those specifically designed for sports and can even cause serious damage to the eyes and face. Everyday glasses can break or shatter, putting the athlete at even greater risk. There is an ever-increasing number of options that allow you to choose the best protection for your specific sport.

Read more about the prevention of sports related eye injuries on the Vision Source website by clicking on the links below. There are several informative articles on the vision source blog that can help you, your children and your athletes stay in the game by taking the proper precautions.
