Our Puppies & Golf community officially chose her name, and we couldn’t think of a more perfect fit!

At the very beginning of her journey with Joys of Living Assistance Dogs, we’re so excited to share every tail wag, training win, and milestone along the way. This little pup has a big future ahead of her, and we’re proud to be part of her story.

It all started with a social media post and a picture of a litter of golden retriever puppies — "Socializers Needed."

It was mid-COVID. My kids were struggling with virtual classrooms, I was struggling to keep them on task while getting my own work done. We were overwhelmed and emotionally exhausted. I knew having a puppy to love and care for was exactly the mix-up we needed.

I was so right. 🐾

Our first puppy was Dawn — her curious antics and enthusiasm for everything was contagious.

5 years and many graduations later, I continue volunteering for the cause. I have seen the faces of the recipients as they connect with the dogs that my family helped shape. I read the prison reports from the adults in custody and can hear the pride they take in training the dogs as they themselves work towards making amends for past mistakes.

These dogs impact so many lives — and I genuinely love being one part of that.

💙 THE BRIDGE 💙

Last week, Nicholas shared how our prison training program transformed his life, moving thousands with his words: "JLAD gave me hope at a time when hope was hard to come by, and it left a lasting impact on who I am today."
Nicholas and others in our prison program help build each dog's foundation—teaching trust, obedience, confidence, and purpose. Our training process is truly a collaborative effort, with dogs rotating between Adults in Custody and community socializers on a regular basis. This partnership ensures each dog receives well-rounded preparation for their future role as service dogs.

Our socializers are essential to this process. They take these dogs into the real world—grocery stores, restaurants, public transportation, crowded events—everywhere a service dog needs to be calm and confident. Socializers bridge the gap between foundation and freedom, continuing the meaningful work that begins behind prison walls.
