Feb. 25 is School Exclusion Day, and the Oregon Immunization Program reminds parents and caretakers that children may not be able to attend school or child care if their records on file show missing immunizations by that day.

This year’s school immunization reminders are especially important. Last year, there were 1,552 cases of pertussis (whooping cough), the highest number we’ve seen in 75 years, a vaccine-preventable disease.

If your child needs immunizations or if you have questions, please contact your health care provider or local health department or call 211. No one can be turned away from a local health department because of the inability to pay for required vaccines.

Health care affordability affects people across our state in very real and personal ways.

We invited people in Oregon to share how health care costs impact their lives. One person in Ashland shared how reduced hours at their job also meant losing health insurance.

In the coming weeks, we’ll continue to share more stories like this.

OHA's new Committee on Health Care Affordability is currently brainstorming policy ideas to address this pressing problem. Follow the committee’s work online (https://ow.ly/LtZU50Y8X4c) and share your thoughts by sending an email to OHPB.Affordability@oha.oregon.gov.

As we gather with families and friends this weekend to watch the game, let’s keep our celebrations safe. Respiratory illnesses like the flu, COVID-19, RSV, measles and whooping cough have been on the rise in recent months and can spread more easily when people are together indoors and sharing food.

Keep yourself and your loved ones safe by keeping these simple steps in mind.

And it’s never too late to get immunized against these and other vaccine-preventable infections. To find a vaccination place near you, visit vaccinefinder.org
