In each edition of Recovery Times, Oregon State Hospital's (OSH) quarterly newsletter, we feature an OSH team member in a section titled 'Meet the team'. In our latest edition, we feature Dr. Sasha Rai, deputy chief medical officer (forensics) and chief of psychiatry.

In his leadership role, Dr. Rai oversees psychiatric services, admissions, forensic evaluation services and patient programs. Through his collaborative leadership style, he works with teams across disciplines to strengthen hospital operations and support continuous improvement at OSH.

Through his work at the hospital, Dr. Rai said he’s gained a greater understanding of OSH’s critical role in supporting the state’s behavioral health system.

Today is National Doctors’ Day, a time to recognize the dedication, skill, and compassion that physicians bring to patient care every day. 👩🏾‍⚕️👩‍⚕️

In psychiatric care, the work of physicians extends far beyond prescriptions and treatment plans. It requires patience, empathy, collaboration, and a deep commitment to understanding the complex needs of each patient. Our doctors work closely with nurses, therapists, technicians, and support staff to create a safe, therapeutic environment where healing can take place.

Thank you to all our wonderful doctors! ❤️

Every day, our social workers bring compassion, expertise, and dedication to the care they provide. They play a critical role in supporting patients and their families, helping them navigate complex challenges, connect with vital resources, and build the skills and confidence needed to move forward.

Thank you to all our social workers for your commitment to patient care! 🫶🏿

Special thanks to Portland musician Papi Fimbres for sharing his music with OSH patients this week.

"Music, for me is therapy. Music is my life. ... I'm using these instruments as a conduit and I'm trying to channel this positive energy we need in this world," Papi shared with OSH patients during his March 12 performance.

At OSH, music and music therapy help patients process and express their emotions and experiences. Events like the concert help connect them to positive community engagement -- with each other and visiting musicians who share their own stories of how music impacts their wellbeing. The concert series began last month with plans for an outdoor music series in the summer.

“Music is a powerful tool. It’s sharing a human experience with people and getting people to recognize the human experience of other people," said Jesse Studenberg, an OSH-Salem music therapist who helped organize Wednesday's event.

Here's a short clip from the performance.
