Kids Who Count

Kids Who Count Kids Who Count is a nonprofit, Early Intervention program serving families in Ut EARLY INTERVENTION

Babies and toddlers grow and develop at different rates.

Early intervention can improve the outcomes for children who need a little extra help to keep their development on track. Early intervention services are authorized by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and are available in every state. As part of the Utah Department of Health Baby Watch Early Intervention program, our goal is to help your child grow and learn, and reach their potential. The Kids Who Count early intervention program serves children from birth to age three in the Nebo School District boundaries who have a delay in their development or a diagnosed disability. Changing screen habits is hard — and that's okay. 💙

Screens are genuinely rewarding for kids (and adults!), so don't be too hard on yourself if this feels like an uphill climb. The key is adopting a growth mindset: try something, see what happens, learn from it, and adjust. Progress over perfection.

When it comes to managing screen time, it usually helps to think about three things:

📺 What your child is watching — Not all screen time is equal. High-quality, prosocial content (think PBS KIDS, Sesame Street) is linked to better development and behavior. If your child is deep in YouTube rabbit holes or fast-paced videos, a simple swap can make a big difference.

🤝 How screens are being used — Are screens being used to disconnect or avoid big feelings? That can get in the way of learning how to handle emotions. Try building in other ways to unwind together — a walk, some deep breaths, a favorite snack ritual.

⏱️ How long screens are on — If screen time is creeping up, try swapping some of it for play, a trip to the library or park, or outdoor time. What's something you've been wanting to do with your child?

Start there — even 20 minutes counts.Small changes add up. You've got this. 💪

A big thanks to Hazel's Mom for sharing her Kids Who Count journey.

"A year ago, our daughter Hazel struggled to communicate her needs, which led to frequent tantrums and challenging behaviors. We felt overwhelmed and didn't know how to help her.

Since starting services at Kids Who Count, the transformation has been incredible. Hazel now speaks and actively tries new words every day. Her behavioral challenges have significantly decreased, and we've learned valuable tools we can use both at home and when we're out.

The changes we've seen are remarkable: Hazel sleeps better, follows directions more easily, and we can now communicate with her through a combination of baby sign language and verbal communication. We can actually understand what she needs most of the time now!

Our home is calmer, transitions between activities are smoother, and best of all, Hazel is more willing to engage and talk with us. The peace of mind we have now is priceless.

Thank you, Kids Who Count, for giving our family the support and tools we needed!"

This book is basically stealth speech therapy! Here's why:

Repetitive sounds - "Truck" and "stuck" repeat /t/ and /k/ sounds that babies learn first

Rhyming power - Stuck/truck/duck builds phonological awareness (key for speech AND reading!)

Action words - PUSH! PULL! Pair words with movement = faster language learning

Predictable repetition - Babies will start joining in with "tuck tuck!" before you know it.

Simple vocabulary - One-syllable words like "push," "pull," "truck" are perfect for early talkers.

Turn-taking practice - Pause before "stuck!" and let them fill it in. This teaches conversation skills!

Natural rhythm - The bouncy text teaches melody, stress patterns, and pacing of speech.

Bottom line: Your baby is practicing speech sounds, vocabulary, and conversation skills while having fun. Win-win!

We're proud to share our Annual Report highlighting a milestone year for families across our community.

This year, KWC provided nearly 12,000 service visits to children and families—our highest number ever. Each visit represents a child reaching new milestones, a family gaining confidence, and a community growing stronger together.

Early intervention changes lives, and these numbers tell the story of dedication, collaboration, and hope in action.

Thank you to our incredible team, partners, and supporters who make this work possible. Here's to even more milestones ahead! 💙

Today is a great day for an indoor hopscotch, which will help boost your child's development. While your little one is hopping and giggling, they're actually:

🧠 Building gross motor skills through jumping and balancing
🔢 Practicing counting and number recognition
⚖️ Developing coordination and balance
🎯 Strengthening focus and planning (which square is next?)
💪 Getting that energy out in a healthy way!

Pro Tips from Kids Who Count:
💡 Let little ones help place the tape (wiggling and crawling = bonus movement!)
💡 Add arm movements for extra exercise
💡 Count the hops together for math practice
💡 Keep it simple for toddlers—fun, not frustration!

February is the perfect time to snuggle up and share some love-themed stories with your little one! Reading together builds literacy skills, strengthens your bond, and improves speech.

Here are some sweet Valentine's Day books we love:

📚 Pete the Cat: Valentine's Day Is Cool - Pete reminds us that making valentines is cooler than being cool!

📚 Happy Valentine's Day, Mouse! - A charming story about friendship and sharing.

📚 Click, Clack, Moo I Love You! - The barnyard friends are back with a heartwarming message. A great way to get your toddler practicing sounds.

📚 Franklin's Valentines - Franklin learns about kindness and thoughtfulness.

Reading tips for toddlers:
❤️ Point to the pictures and name objects together
❤️ Ask simple questions: "What color is that heart?"
❤️ Let them turn the pages
❤️ Read with expression and silly voices
❤️ Reread favorites as many times as they want!

Kids Who Count and Early Intervention providers across Utah are seeking critical legislative funding for Part C services—programs that help children ages 0-3 with developmental delays and disabilities thrive.
