Kids Who Count

Kids Who Count Kids Who Count is a nonprofit, Early Intervention program serving families in Ut EARLY INTERVENTION

Babies and toddlers grow and develop at different rates.

Early intervention can improve the outcomes for children who need a little extra help to keep their development on track. Early intervention services are authorized by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and are available in every state. As part of the Utah Department of Health Baby Watch Early Intervention program, our goal is to help your child grow and learn, and reach their potential. The Kids Who Count early intervention program serves children from birth to age three in the Nebo School District boundaries who have a delay in their development or a diagnosed disability. "We love them!" β€” words that mean the world to us.

When Jackson wasn't talking at 18 months, his mom reached out to Kids Who Count not knowing what to expect. From the very first visit, our team showed up with warmth, care, and a plan.

Now? Jackson is talking more, playing better with his siblings, and making incredible strides every single day. His family says it best: "Kids Who Count has made it possible for us to communicate with our son."

A special shoutout to Rachael, who has been β€” in his mom's words β€” "a game changer for Jackson." 🌟

This is why we do what we do. Every child deserves the chance to be heard. πŸ’™

πŸ₯§πŸ”’πŸŽ‰ Happy Pi Day (3.14)!

Today, challenge your little learner to count 3 things they can touch, 1 thing they can hear, and 4 things they can see β€” just like the first digits of Ο€!

It doesn't matter if they count to 3 or 300 β€” every number said out loud is a big win.

🌟 Dev Tip: Counting objects by touching them one at a time (one-to-one correspondence) builds more than math β€” it supports fine motor control, attention, and language too. Try counting berries, stairs, or claps in a song.

Repetition across daily routines is where the magic happens! ✨

Every smile, babble, giggle, and cry is their way of saying, "I'm here, I love you, I need you." And the good news? You don't need special toys or programs to support their language development β€” just your voice and the everyday moments you're already sharing.

Here are some simple ways to keep the conversation going:

πŸ› Any time: Narrate your day as you bathe, dress, and care for your baby. "I'm washing your little fingers now!" It might feel silly, but your voice is their favorite sound in the world.

🍽️ Mealtimes: Name the foods, talk about their reactions, and make it interactive β€” even if peas end up on the ceiling. πŸ˜„

πŸš— On the go: Point out colors, count things you see, sing, imitate animal sounds, and wave hello to everyone you pass. Every outing is a learning adventure!

Whether your child has special hearing or vision needs, there are ways to adapt β€” like using gestures, signing, or a gentle touch before you speak. Every child deserves to feel heard.

The moments that matter most are often the smallest ones. Keep talking β€” they're listening. 🀍

πŸ›‹οΈ Did you know your couch is a learning playground?

Couch time with your little one isn't just relaxing β€” it's a chance to build big skills!
Here are 4 easy ways to turn everyday moments into early learning wins:

πŸ”οΈ Cushion Mountain β€” Stack pillows and let your child climb! Great for building those large muscles.

🚢 Cruise & Play β€” Pull the cushions off and place toys at the back of the couch to encourage your little one to pull up and reach. Perfect for pre-walkers!

🏠 Blanket Fort β€” Drape a sheet between cushions and chairs. Crawling in and out builds strength and teaches spatial words like in, out, under, and on.

πŸ“š Snuggle & Read β€” Keep a basket of books nearby for story time. Reading together again and again is one of the best things you can do for your child's language development.

Small moments = big development. πŸ’›

Helping Little Ones Manage Big Feelings

Self-regulation β€” the ability to manage emotions and transitions β€” is one of the most important skills your child will ever learn. And the good news? You can help build it every single day!

Here are a few simple ways to support your child:

🏠 Create a consistent routine. Let your baby know what's coming next: "We're almost done playing β€” bath time is next!" Predictability helps little ones feel safe and transition more smoothly. (Great for babies 12 months+)

😌 Stay calm to help them calm down. When tantrums hit, your steady voice and relaxed energy can be contagious. Take a breath β€” they're watching you. (Ages 2–3)

πŸ“š Name those feelings. Read books about emotions together and talk about how the body feels when we're angry, sad, or overwhelmed. Then explore healthy ways to cope, like deep breathing or gentle movement. (Ages 3–4)

Big feelings are a normal part of growing up. With your support, children learn to understand themselves β€” and that makes all the difference.

Your Child's Vision Matters More Than You Think!

Did you know that 1 in 4 children has an undiagnosed vision problem? Many kids don't realize they can't see clearly because blurry vision feels "normal" to them.

Early eye exams are crucial because:

✨ 80% of learning happens through sight
✨ Vision problems can be mistaken for learning difficulties
✨ Many eye conditions are easily treatable when caught early
✨ Children's vision develops rapidly in their first few years

Don't wait for your child to complain about their vision - they might not even know there's a problem! Early detection can make all the difference in their learning, confidence, and quality of life.

After 27 incredible years, it's time to say a bittersweet farewell to our beloved Connie!

Since joining Kids Who Count in 1998, Connie has worn many hatsβ€” conducting evaluations, working hands-on with children and families in their homes, and facilitating playgroups that made a lasting difference.

Most recently, she served as our Referral Intake and Compliance Manager, where she was the steady, guiding force behind hiring, training, and supporting our service coordinator team.

Connie, your dedication, compassion, and leadership have touched more lives than you'll ever knowβ€” from the families you served, to the teammates you mentored, to the community partners who relied on your expertise.

You are not just valued hereβ€” you are deeply, wholeheartedly loved. ❀️

Now it's YOUR turn! We can't wait to hear all about those vacations you have planned. You've more than earned every single one. 🌴✈️

Wishing you all the joy, rest, and adventure that retirement brings!
