Changing screen habits is hard — and that's okay. 💙
Screens are genuinely rewarding for kids (and adults!), so don't be too hard on yourself if this feels like an uphill climb. The key is adopting a growth mindset: try something, see what happens, learn from it, and adjust. Progress over perfection.
When it comes to managing screen time, it usually helps to think about three things:
📺 What your child is watching — Not all screen time is equal. High-quality, prosocial content (think PBS KIDS, Sesame Street) is linked to better development and behavior. If your child is deep in YouTube rabbit holes or fast-paced videos, a simple swap can make a big difference.
🤝 How screens are being used — Are screens being used to disconnect or avoid big feelings? That can get in the way of learning how to handle emotions. Try building in other ways to unwind together — a walk, some deep breaths, a favorite snack ritual.
⏱️ How long screens are on — If screen time is creeping up, try swapping some of it for play, a trip to the library or park, or outdoor time. What's something you've been wanting to do with your child?
Start there — even 20 minutes counts.Small changes add up. You've got this. 💪
