On this day, 58 years ago, January 15, 1968, 20-year-old Specialist Five Dwight H. Johnson of the United States Army was a tank driver with Company B, 1st Battalion, 69th Armor, moving as part of a reaction force near Dak To in the Central Highlands of South Vietnam.

He was in a column of M48 Patton tanks sent to aid other elements of his platoon that had run into a battalion-size North Vietnamese force which had set up a heavy ambush along the route.

As the reaction force reached the ambush site, enemy antitank rockets and automatic weapons fire smashed into the column, disabling two tanks almost immediately and stopping the advance under a storm of fire from the tree line.

Johnson’s own tank threw a track and became immobilized at the point of contact, leaving it a stationary target under intense enemy fire.

Realizing he could no longer fight as a driver, Specialist Five Johnson climbed out of his tank, armed only with a .45 caliber pistol, and moved on foot directly into the kill zone where North Vietnamese infantry were pressing in on the crippled armor.

Despite the heavy volume of antitank rockets, small arms, and automatic weapons fire, he advanced through the open, firing his pistol at close range and killing several enemy soldiers as they closed on the disabled vehicles.

When his pistol ammunition was gone, he fought his way back through the same fire to his immobilized tank, climbed inside, and grabbed a submachine gun to continue the fight.

Armed with the submachine gun, he went back into the center of the ambush and again engaged the attacking North Vietnamese at close range, cutting down more of them while enemy fire raked the ground around him.

As the enemy pushed closer around the tanks, Johnson ran out of ammunition a second time and found himself in extremely close combat range.

When one North Vietnamese soldier rushed him, Johnson swung the empty submachine gun like a club and killed the attacker with the stock, fighting hand to hand in the middle of the engagement area.

Now weaponless, he ignored the fire still pouring in and sprinted to his platoon sergeant’s disabled tank, climbed aboard, and dropped inside the burning vehicle to reach the crew.

He grabbed a badly wounded crewmember, dragged him up out of the tank, and carried him across open ground to a nearby armored personnel carrier for evacuation, still under enemy fire.

Johnson then returned to the same tank and helped man its main gun, loading and firing the cannon into the tree line until the weapon jammed.

With the main gun out of action, he climbed back out, moved again through the exposed area to his own immobilized tank, and remounted it while the fight continued at close range.

He took position behind the externally mounted .50 caliber machine gun on top of his tank, fully exposed above the turret, and opened fire on the attacking enemy soldiers, holding his position and engaging them until the situation was finally brought under control and the North Vietnamese broke contact.

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty near Dak To, Republic of Vietnam, on January 15, 1968, Specialist Five Dwight Hal Johnson, Company B, 1st Battalion, 69th Armor, was awarded the Medal of Honor.

Dwight Hal Johnson later rose to the rank of Sergeant.

On April 30, 1971, at age 23, he was shot and killed during an armed robbery at a liquor or convenience store in Detroit, Michigan.

Friday, February 13th 6pm - 8pm

Class is conducted by a Former State Police Trooper & Federal Law Enforcement Officer.
This FREE CLASS is for educational purposes only and is not legal advice. Laws change. Always verify current statutes. It is strongly recommended to seek professional legal advice from an attorney familiar with fi****ms laws.

While New Hampshire is a permit-less carry state and doesn't legally mandate gun law classes for basic ownership, taking one is crucial to avoid severe penalties, understand crucial rules for safe storage, transport (especially in vehicles/prohibited areas), and the severe escalation of crimes when fi****ms are involved, ensuring responsible gun ownership and preventing serious jail time or fines, especially in a state with minimal gun law oversight.

While NH offers great freedom, classes provide vital knowledge to navigate complex laws, avoid severe penalties, and practice responsible gun ownership, turning a right into a safely exercised duty.

What is covered:

Definitions of pistols/revolvers

Gun-free court areas
