And some more pictures from our wonderful Thanksgiving Dinner.

In the 1950s, every kindergartener knew the ritual: crayons down, lights low, and the soft hum of a record spinning through the air.
Naptime wasn’t a break — it was part of learning.

Teachers dimmed the lights, tiptoed between mats, and whispered, “Close your eyes.”
Kids rested, dreamed, or just stared at sunbeams dancing on the ceiling — learning something we’ve since forgotten: that rest is part of growth.

Then came the tests.
The “readiness.”
The race to get ahead.
By the 1980s, naps were gone. The mats rolled up. The lights stayed on.

Today, five-year-olds spend more time in structured lessons than third-graders did in the 1950s — no pauses, no quiet, no chance to just be.
And we wonder why they’re anxious.

Maybe it’s time we remembered what our teachers once knew:
You don’t grow by running all the time.
You grow in the stillness too.
Even big kids need naptime sometimes.

A fantastic Thanksgiving dinner tonight for the staff and their families. It was all delicious home cooked food prepared by the leadership members in appreciation for our hard working people.

They work hard day in and day out- taking excellent care of the individuals in our care. Without each of them - Key Living Options could not exist. Thank each of you and I hope you enjoyed the Thanksgiving Dinner in your honor!!!

As a final note- the pumpkin carving was judged and the first place was awarded to the spider carving. It was a fierce competition but a winner had to be selected so this spooky prize could be awarded. Congrats!!!

Thursday of retreat was devoted to some stress management skills and mindfulness awareness. Thanks so much to InStill Mindfulness folks who came over to instruct and share some wonderful insights and exercises we can use daily moving forward. It was a terrific way to finish our Leadership Retreat.

Day 2 of our Leadership Retreat was alot of fun. We made a homemade dinner to celebrate our 18 year anniversary just around the corner. We played games outside and carved pumpkins. And more importantly we spent time together as a family!

We talk a lot about “independence” in disability services.

It’s a word that rolls off the tongue like it belongs to everyone. But too often, when it comes to people with developmental and intellectual disabilities, “independence” gets redefined to mean “what we allow.”

You can live here - but only if we say yes.
You can choose this - but only from the options we approve.
You can go there - but only if someone drives you.

That’s not independence. That’s managed compliance.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth. Real independence is messy. It means mistakes, risks, even failures. It means someone with a developmental disability has the same right to make a bad decision, or to be imperfect. Just like everyone else.

If you want to support people, stop bubble-wrapping lives. Start making space for risk, for growth, for the dignity of trying.

Because control disguised as “care” is not kindness, it’s captivity.
